The beauty of a player that is struggling like Kugel did last night...

I thought Jans was going to rip his head off after those first 3 possessions. Missed layup then 2 turnovers. He immediately sat.

Lots of flu and stuff going around. He could simply have been sick. It happens.

feel like this is the most offensive weapons I’ve seen on a MSU MBB team in 20 years - maybe ever.
Going with ever.
We've had some really exciting offensive players in the past wearing the maroon and white. But it seems like everyone taking the floor for us right now seems to have so much ability in terms of making plays and making shots.
And you have to believe they will get more consistent and confident as the season progresses.
They will need to if we want to contend for a top spot in the conference.
and a top four seed in the tourney.

You never know what is going on at home or even back in Starkville. I tell myself that every time someone is rude to me. I just let it go unless it is continued the next few times I meet.

is we have enough depth to sit him. I don't know what was going on with him last night but he looked completely disinterested.
This excerpt from the On3 story sums it up to me:

With Riley Kugel and Josh Hubbard scoring a combined nine points, Melendez rose to the occasion. The senior forward scored 19 points in the game on 8-of-14 shooting with seven rebounds, two steals and a block.

When RJ (basically who I expect to be our 5th scoring option on any night) and Cam (who I would put 6th) are your leading scorers and you still win by a dozen on the road in the SEC... well, we have something brewing here now.

He's the best player on the floor when he's playing well, which has been a lot lately. Hopefully he was just under the weather.
Agree, seems everyone was lauding him just a few days ago. Got a little Q vibe to him as he always "looks" disinterested to me. Not sure what was up last night.

2 Went from his best game to his worst. he was in slow motion last night. the 6 empty trips came with Cam on the bench. Jans left Cam on the bench too long. Cam with the ball puts a lot of strain on the other team. I love 22 -he is a complete ball player.

Cam is the one player that we would really struggle if he had a bad night or injury
Or if he gets 2 fouls in the first half. You can go ahead and write in that we'll be down at half, come back in the second, and expect a tight finish. That seems to be a pattern, and I assume why Jans lets Cam sit good portions of the first half of some games.

Coaches are too cautious in sitting players with 2 fouls. We need Cam on the floor. I'm OK sitting him a couple of minutes at a time maybe. But you've only got 40 minutes. If you sit one of your best players for 10 in the 1st half because he picked up his 2nd foul, you've just conceded those minutes. Leave him in. Worst case, he does foul out and you lose those minutes anyway later in the game. But he might not foul out, in which case you wasted those minutes sitting him in the 1st half.

We only used 8 players last night, which is surprising when Kugel only played 9 mins., and Hubbard only scored 9 pts. We didn't rely on depth so much as options in our offensive production.

That is something that has been missing, especially in the Howland years. If someone was not playing a good game, it was dead weight in the lineup. There was nothing left to do but watch them either give the game away, brick a bunch of free throws that could have been the difference, or make it impossible to make a run.

This year you can place 5 players on the court that are contributing at the same level.

Well the refs allowed Vandy to play karate defense all night, especially the second half. It had an impact on several of our players but we survived!
Those nights are going to happen, where we don't get the calls. Players just need to play through that.

It was odd. Definitely his worst game.

As he should have. He looked lethargic and not ready to play.
These guys are getting paid, they better bring the effort every night. Playing through adversity is part of the game and life.
Bring the effort! That's something all of us can control every day.

Kugel made a bad mistake early on and it was in his head the whole night. He was really pressing to make up for it and it just made it worse. It happens. Biggest thing for him is to flush it and move on.

Might set up well for him going into playing UK. You know he's going to want to have a big night.

My wife had an interesting theory. Ever the mom, she immediately said "Kugel looks sick, I bet he has the nasty flu that's going around. I can see it in his eyes". Hopefully she is right.

Not to mention Clary, another guy who can handle the ball and shoots well, has been injured.

We definitely have the depth we have been lacking we also have old leaders now and folks that know their role and aren't trying to bolt for Europe or something. Jan's made some good moves in portal
