Campus Book Mart? Which ironically is off campus.
I can see downtown closing but the campus location is wrapped up most of the time. Strangely enough they stay open till like 8:00 at night and open up at 7:00 a.m., they could save some bucks and knock some hours of of those current ones no problem because nobody is ever there at 7:00 in the morning or after about 6:00 at night.

Downtown location.
I can easily see that happening, but couldn't understand Campus one. I've been in downtown once in all of my years coming to Starkville and was underwhelmed. Since they stopped handling text books its understandable

I'd hate to be a business on Main Street right now. It's basically shutdown for two years

And that's after about 2 years of underground utility infrastructure replacements too that still haven't been completed (some streets unpaved) Its one of the reasons Hobie moved, it was killing his business. Now, you have the new Presidential Library, hotel, restaurants and shops going up, I can't see that helping downtown much unless tourist/weekend fans run out of things to do in the new area. Could be rough go for downtown but since downtown reno was Spruill's pet project she'll spin it as the best thing that could happen for them

It'll be years before any of that stuff is complete. The hotel is the only thing they've announced a timeline on and it isn't scheduled to open until 2027. For now, all the other stuff is just renderings on a website. It reminds me of how the University releases a master plan every 5 years or so. Very few of the things in those master plan renderings ever come to fruition.

Spruill's pet project she'll spin it as the best thing that could happen for them...Kind of like parking is not an issue downtown.

The way I heard it, they are going to spend all this time and money to 17 it up like they have the other main arteries in starkville. The middle of the road will have planters and they're making sidewalks you could land a 737 on. Parking will get culled. Moronic.

User name checks out
I mean long term it’s probably a good thing for downtown but I’d guarantee there was a better approach to eliminate some short term pain for the business owners.

ironically the city will feel that short term pain as well.

the owner is getting ready to retire, that is the reason for closing the downtown location.

From Facebook:
RETIREMENT NEWS:
Thank you Downtown Starkville and the community for letting Book Mart & Cafe’ be a part of your lives for over 50 years. What a fun ride this has been. From dusting books in the children’s section to eventually running the store I have truly had a dream job all my life. So many people that I have been so blessed to get to know from our amazing group of regional authors, wonderful employees, middle schoolers that always made me smile, our fun groups that played bridge, bunco, knitting and book club members, the retail merchants, the dynamic Partnership and of course our loyal customers that shopped with us even during Covid - I thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of our amazing community. We are closing and we’ll be having some good sales AND something wonderful will be in this location …….So stay tuned!
