Thanks for posting that video. I was at that game at Texas A&M, and remember Jeff Hostetler starting it at QB.

One fond memory: 3 of my former students were then sophomores at TAMU, and after the game they all went up to Joe and asked for his autograph for their crazy teacher who loved Penn State. Joe spoke to them for a few minutes and graciously gave them the autograph ... which I still have.

I'm not sure where ya all are going with this thread.
I would not be a PSU fan if it wasn't for my late brother , he got me hooked on the upset of Ohio St. in 63 or 64 at OSU when they were ranked # 1, on the radio of course. That's almost 60 years and still going.

Speaking of OSU, wacking them in the Fiesta was kind of neat with a neutral site with neutral officials, my only wish at the time was it wasn't Michigan.

Observation on the highlights thinking was Warner that fast or ahead of the rest of the pack ? Booker and Coles looked quick too.

Step I thought for sure you of all people would appreciate a bit of nostalgia.

I posted this because I enjoy seeing the old psu teams. Hearing some of the old names and not just the superstars that we all still remember. Frank Case Vyto Kab Mike Meade etc. and how much film is there of Jeff Hostetler in a psu uniform?
And Frank Rocco was the reason Joe wasn’t able to recruit Marino to PSU (according to Marino butI believe that was tongue in cheek)

Hadn't seen much of Hoss is PSU gear either, you look back now and he was far more talented than Blackledge, but Joe and crew made the right call as the 82 title would agree.

So Marino didn’t play in 1980. He only played 2 years. We accepted the bowl game before our last game. That is the way they used to do it for those who think differently about the 69 bowl destination.

that was the start of the next team that would play for it all and won. Funny how Joe moved booker to fullback after 1979 issues. I remember hearing from the alumni in the stands when moore was suspended that maybe Joe should have a drink.

Looking at my post now…..9:45 pm
Most of my gibberish speaking after 7pm should be ignored. 🥺@Corner Room Breakfast
Appears that I finished 1/4 bottle of Makers 46 last evening. I apologize.
Actually didn’t realize a video was posted…
Thought it was a picture.

Dan Marino college stats
Pitt football 1980

Interesting that Marino is not in those highlights. Can't recall if there was a reason he did not play, or played in a limited role, vs. us in 1980, other than Trocano winning the starting job. Marino led the team in QB stats for the season. I was there and can recall some moments in the game, but not that Trocano was their QB that day.

Your comment about Marino playing just 2 season made me curious. Maybe you meant that he played vs. PSU for just 2 seasons?
I looked up his stats. Marino's Pitt career spanned the 4 seasons from 1979-1982. His stats from this source indicates he played in all 12 games of 1980, and all 48 in his college career.

In any event, great to see those old highlights and see all those great PSU players in action! And Ray Scott's voice!

That is what had me confused. Why did he not play against us. How many games did trocano play. If backup I’m surprised that we lost to backup. I remember it was a frustrating game .

Because trocano was actually a pretty good college QB. Marino really took off the next two years but I think he had better skill position talent than Trocano.

Marino got hurt in ‘80. Don’t remember which game or how much time he missed. Not sure those stats showing 12 games are correct as far as actual participation in a game.

As another other post mentioned the early bowl invites, the Sugar Bowl invited an at the time #2 ND to play UGA that year. ND went on to later lose to USC and fall in the rankings. Theoretically FSU would have been invited before Pitt under more recent methods of selections, but we’ll never know if they missed out on an opportunity.

So was I. Got tickets from my younger brother’s roommate whom was Rodger Puz (played LB and now is an attorney). Sat with parents of the players-great conversations with Bob Jaeger’s and Mike Munchak’s parents.

Marino was the starter that year as a Soph and Trocano was the safety most of the year. When Marino hurt his knee Trocano went back to QB.

our wins over OSU and other power schools in the 1980's and 1990's were rarely upsets. We were the superior team and had greater talent than many of these teams, including OSU. things started to change when the sweater vest went to tOSU and we hit the "dark years". Even after that there were some years we were the better team in talent (i.e. 2008 and 2009 with Clark at QB). re tOSU things really changed when we were punished by the NCAA and tOSU brought in Urban. Since 2000, I don't think UMich has been any more successful v tOSU than we have - in terms of wins and competitive games.

Freshman year, 18 years old. I was in those stands somewhere, including the Pitt game. My kids look at the video and wonder if that is a different stadium. Thanks for the memories, RO

A few thoughts
1. Thank you for digging up an sharing
2. A lot of great names to reminisce about
3. It’s great they didn’t edit out JoePa
4. A running joke with my PSU buddies at the time was it felt like Joel Coles had about seven years of eligibility

Two things stood out -- the fact that Ray Scott never mentioned Hostetler by name in those first 2 game clips. I kept trying to figure out who #15 was (thinking it was Darryle Tate) until I remembered at the end that Blackledge had taken the job from Hostetler and causing him to transfer to WVU. The other thing was that PSU wore their home blues on the road at Missouri. Trying to rack my brain but I can't recall in all my years as a PSU guy that they wore blue in a true road game.

When college football was college football. Speaking of nostalgia, who remembers this show?

You actually got to see your school band at half time. Now talking Jack Asses about Heisman's in September, and playoffs in October. The game and the surrounding cast today suck.

Back in the day Cher Stupar (Hostetler) was in our dorm/dining area and she always said Jeff was the most talented brother.
