The dreaded corner fade on 3rd and short

When It was 3rd and 2 inside OSU‘s 20 I yelled they’re going to run that play and, low and behold, they did. They did it against Michigan when they were inside their 10 and could get a first down. Please, someone enlighten me on why they continue to run this terrible, low percentage play in just about every situation similar to the ones above.

What sucks is that we want them to score, but we know if they do score, it validates the play in Franklins mind and he’ll do it even more

We're simply (and consistently) awful with this play. Have been for some time.

I threw my hat at the tv on that play. I'm with you. I would have no problem if they tear that page out of the play book. When was the last time it worked?

Only time i remember was a wheel route to Saquon not a true fade....Keyvone caught a wheel route against Purdue for the win....but it wasn't a fade....have we seen THAT play since?

Seriously believe it’s the pressure for the “explosive play” or is this Clifford changing the play at the line?
Given that this wouldn't have met the definition of "explosive play," we can all rest comfortably knowing this wasn't the case.

And to Bob's point, if it doesn't work, they'll just run it again and again until it does work. Insanity.

I hate the corner fade and wish it was thrown out of all playbooks. The only time I see it being at all worthwhile is on 1st or 2nd down, with a big athletic target on the outside ... and, even then, it's mainly to set up the next play slanting in. Get the defense worried about guarding the sidelines, and then break someone into the middle for an easy completion. But I'd rather it was just banned altogether. Doing it on 3rd, or ... gasp ... 4th down is just giving up and praying.

Why don't they run the reverse anymore? Joe would always pull that out at the perfect time and it was impossible to defend. CJF needs to get that on his playsheet

We did it at Michigan on the go for it 4th and 6 which was dumb and we did it again this week. Just have to wonder which coach thinks it is a good idea would really like that questioned answered and put a stat with it like we are 1 for 20 maybe on it? 0 for 15? If so then why would you keep doing it. You need 6 yards. You need 2 yards. Why try to get 20 unless you are going for the flag.

some reporter needs to ask the question!

It wasn't 3rd and 2 - it was 3rd and about 1 foot. - and it was actually a wheel route, not a fade - but the gist of your comment is equally valid.

As bizarre as that situation was (Not only with the wheel route call, but also with the bizarre follow up decision to kick the FG on 4th and 1 foot. Thank goodness for the sequence of penalties that followed), I am not 100% sure that someone didn't think that PSU had picked up a first down in the previous play (it was a pass to Allen out in the right flat, where he was pushed OOB right at the sticks. This was the far side sticks from the PSU bench).
That seems bizarre - especially since they could have certainly called a time out before the snap, once they realized it was not a first down - but either way it was such an incredibly fouled up situation I really wouldn't assume that it couldn't have started by someone thinking it was actually 1st and 10, and sending in that play under that assumption. The PSU sideline seemed more than a bit discombobulated as that play was coming to the line. It certainly was not only NOT a play call you would run on 3rd and short (if you were not willing to go for it on 4th and short), and was VERY much not a formation you would use on 3rd and 1 foot.

interesting. who ran the fade? just curious.

i saw a wheel route, the same one penn state ran against wisconsin in the big ten title game. i did not see a fade, so curious who ran the fade, and if we had the wheel, why did clifford throw the fade?

maybe because it wasn't a fade. just a thought.

Announcer on tv said the running this exact play.
That was Joel Klatt. And, aside from a TB wheel route being part of the route combination, it certainly wasn't "the same play" (and its not like PSU hasn't run dozens of "wheel routes" since then).
But, hey, it was Joel Klatt.

Yes we did. I believe it was vs Auburn and Singleton dropped it.

You are correct. That was not the dreaded fade. It was the wheel and thrown away because the receiver was covered.

Does that play even work in practice? Is Allar watching this *stuff* and wondering if he made the right decision?
