Could be old news, but apparently last Friday Meredith pissed off the legislature. Seems he was taking some heat for the tuition increases, so he promptly passed the buck to the legislature, saying they wouldn't give him enough money to support our universities. I know the Meredith thing has been run into the ground, but apparently this was a big deal. Those are people who don't like to be called out. I heard from people who don't normally weigh in on this kind of thing, that a lot of people are really mad. Anybody got info?

The Legislature was busy doing nothing but wasting taxpayer money during the special session this week. The session started on Tuesday and yesterday afternoon legislators said they needed to take a break. I still say the State could buy stock in Dole, replace all legislators with chimps, pay them in bananas, and come out no worse in the end. We'd save a heck of a lot of money and get the same amount done.

who have stated publicly that they are looking for a reason to get him out of here. I work in state gov't and I have a hard time finding people that have anything good to say about him. As I understand it, one of his main supporters was cut from power for the next three years. Perhaps this will hasten his departure, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

In his defense, to an extent, what he said about the IHL appropriation is true. The Legislature will put the vast majority of the education money in K-12 and that leaves very little for IHL. The upkeep on our college campuses costs a lot.. which leads us back to the "we have too many colleges for a state our size" arguement.

it wouldn't surprise me. I don't really care because I don't have to deal with him directly as some in our office do (I still see quite a bit of him).

We also have way too many K-12 school districts in this state as well, each with their own superintendent and asst. superintendent, along with support staff for each.

Nobody wastes money and resources like we do here in Mississippi. All while complaining there isn't enough to go around.

I count 8 public in MS for about a 2 mill popul. I count 16 public in NC for a population that is about 4 times that of MS. My numbers could be wrong though.

that, because we are last in K-12 education, we send fewer to Institutions of Higher Learning than does NC. Not to mention we probably don't have the influx of out-of-state students they get.

Hell, it's actually smart financially.
I went the JUCO route for that very reason......had a all expense paid tuition/room and board/books scholarship to JUCO......whereas i only had a quarter tuition scholarship offer from State at the time.........Parlayed the JUCO route into a half tuition scholarship at STATE....

I had the full tuition/room/board hook up at Hinds because I'm smarter than BiggerFeces, but I had to pay for books. And I parlayed Hinds into a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship to MSU, back when that actually meant nearly full tuition.

That's been an old complaint not just in Mississippi, but across the nation, which is why the foundations and private donors have become more and more important to all colleges and universities.

Plus, the increased tuition pretty much acts as a limited tax revenue stream for the legislature and IHL universities.

I doubt very seriously Meredith would be in trouble over that... it has to be something else.

....and got $4800 in scholarships for it. That was the best return on investment I've ever gotten on anything.

Someone should request a study by some sort of state financial analysts to illustrate that. What legislator would be willing to wade into that?

and bashed the legislature for it. They say well, we're already giving you more than we did last year (which they should do.) Plus, you never publicly put the blame on your boss.

...he's supposed to be the advocate for the IHLs, and I believe the legislators are smart enough to know that he's just lobbying. Blaming the states for lack of funding is an old, old, old argument... I've seen a lot of articles about funding difficulties nationwide in the past few years-- but then it's kind of a side-effect of my job (I work in higher education).

If he's in trouble with legislators, I think it could be over other things such as his handling of past presidential searches or the new funding formula that has affected a lot of colleges in the state negatively (Delta State folks are pissed off...)-- just to name a couple of examples.
