The dude can recruit. He had the number 1 player drafted last year in David Price and a top 3 pick this year in Pedro Alvarez. Pedro Alvarez makes Conner Powers look like a kid on my 8 year old rec-ball team I coach. And Powers will get drafted in the top 15 rounds.

because he turned down LSU a few years back. May be a good assumption, I don't claim to know anything to suggest otherwise. I do know he's a damn good coach.

But we're making a huge mistake if we're crossing people off the list before even contacting them because we assume they're not interested. He wouldn't be the first coach to turn down a good job and then turn around and take another one a couple of years later.

where there are definitely inherent disadvantages even to compete in baseball in this league and the baseball facilities are rather shoddy or at least they were. Is he a Vandy grad?

I think most people would put Casey on top of the list, and rightfully so. He won 2 national titles at Oregon State, come on. The one holdup is the fact that he is an extreme longshot. The only reason we are discussing him is the fact that Byrne once worked there and thus knows Casey. This would be the top hire we could make right now.

Behind him are guys like Corbin, Cohen, and O'Conner. Really, we can't go wrong with any of those guys listed in this post. I believe each and every one of these guys have proven themselves in the area of recruiting. Corbin has taken Vandy and made them into a consistent winner. O'Conner has enjoyed a ton of success at UVA, leading them to some impressive records. Their season ended at the hands of Oregon State last year. Cohen has lifted up UK out of the craphole they were in and has made them a legitimate baseball program. If we hire any of these guys the excitement level will immediately rise.

....there's no reason not to start at the top of the list (Casey), and work your way down. The worst thing that they can do is say no. Cohen needs to be at best, 4th choice (behind Casey, O'Conner, and Corbin off the top of my head), but he doesn't have to know that. Start at the top and keep the process extremely quiet.

And while we're at it, we might as well give Horton, Fox, and Murphy a call, too. The worst they can do is say, "No."

...the only danger is it getting out, and getting down to Cohen that he is your 5th or 6th choice, and him not being happy about that. And it does sometimes make headlines like "Mississippi State AD Greg Byrne asks for permission to speak with Pat Casey," etc., but I think that's a risk you've got to take.

This isn't the first coaching search he's been around. One of the pros to hiring him was his experience as an assistant in successful major conference athletic departments.

Is probably going to go down as the greatest coach in their school's history if he stays.

That said, he might consider us. We should at least ask.

...and the less we hear about this in the next 2-3 weeks, the better. Remember the clusterf*** that was the OM coaching search circa 2004? That's what we want to avoid, and I think Byrne will be able to do that. The only way we should hear anything in the next two weeks is if we are brining in Showalter, Raffo, or Brantley. So I'm betting the silence will be deafening around here for a while.

If you ask me (and no one is), if Cohen or whoever is going to get his panties in a wad because we would dare to attempt to contact the coach of the two-time defending champion, that's his problem.
