NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)-Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player- too good, it turns out.</p>

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.</p>

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho's team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho's coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.</p>

But Vidro says he didn't quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league's field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.</p> <div class="skinny"></div> <div id="sky"> <table class="ad_slug_table" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td align="middle"> <span class="ad_slug"><font class="ad_slug_font" face="Arial" size="-2">ADVERTISEMENT</font>

[/url]</noscript> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <noscript>
</noscript> </div>

"He's never hurt any one," Vidro said. "He's on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?"</p>

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.</p>

"I feel sad," he said. "I feel like it's all my fault nobody could play."</p>

Jericho's coach and parents say the boy is being unfairly targeted because he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league's administrators.</p>

Jericho instead joined a team sponsored by Will Power Fitness. The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching.</p>

"I think it's discouraging when you're telling a 9-year-old you're too good at something," said his mother, Nicole Scott. "The whole objective in life is to find something you're good at and stick with it. I'd rather he spend all his time on the baseball field than idolizing someone standing on the street corner."</p>

League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.</p>

"He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower," Noble said. "There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport."</p>

Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.</p>

"Facing that kind of speed" is frightening for beginning players, Noble said.</p>

League officials say they first told Vidro that the boy could not pitch after a game on Aug. 13. Jericho played second base the next game on Aug. 16. But when he took the mound Wednesday, the other team walked off and a forfeit was called.</p>

League officials say Jericho's mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.</p>

"I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho's mother exhibited Wednesday night," Noble said.</p>

Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police.</p>

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.</p>

Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jericho's parents Monday to discuss legal options.</p>

"You don't have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it's wrong," he said. "Now you have to be punished</p>

Sounds like there's plenty of douchebaggery to go around
he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league's administrators
...interesting way to "promote the sport" Way to go. You'll be the antagonists that everyone hates in the inevitable made-for-TV movie.

and of course, we have the berserk little league mom.
Jericho's mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down
You stay classy, New Haven.

or even further up if warranted. I know the league my son played in had a few kids that were 2-3 years younger that were developed faster than most.

This brings back "fond" memories for me in the Greenwood pony leagues of having to go up against a kid named James Denton. He was the kid in the 12-13 year old league with full facial hair throwing curveballs and fast balls twice the speed of any other pitcher.

I would be pissed off if that was my son to. My son's too good, so you're going to disband his team so that the "chosen team" can win the Championship in <17'n> co-ed (seriously?) Little League.

Just another example from the <17> up world of Little League, which includes plastering your childs name, position and home run total on the back of your SUV while going to play tournaments in Shabuta.

Sounds like the kid's mom is being just as stubborn as everyone else. I am sure some league would be glad to have the kid. The right to entitlement is worse to me then the pussification of America. People are so damn litigious and petty. I am sure if the mom sat down with the right people and talked it out, then everyone would come up with a satisfying outcome. But nooo, since the mom feels that she is entitled to whatever she wants, then she is going to call the cops, call her lawyer and make a big deal out of it instead of working it out.

I would bet that there are very clear, definitive rules for signing your kid up to play in that league. I would also bet that her kid met all of the criteria. But now that it turns out that he is better than all of the other pitchers, they disqualify him. If the league wants to come to her/him and suggest moving him up to a more competitive older league fine. But to just tell him he can't play is BS.

because Darren Mcfadden was too good. He should have had to play in the NFL.

I do agree about our society being way too litigious. I would have been pissed too, but I wouldn't have called the cops or a lawyer.

This does reek of somebody's team getting their *** beat and wanting the best player out of the way so they could win. Take your *** beating hope when he's 15 he's still the same size with the same 40 mph fastball and return the *** whipping.</p>

If the banning is because the kids are scared, then those players are lucky that they weren't in Starkville in the summers of 1994 and 1995 because Travis Outlaw was throwing the ball twice as fast as anyone else in the league, too. The difference was he didn't have the first idea where it was going.

The story I heard this morning said that there were 2 leagues for the age group a beginner league and an advanced league. His mother lied about him playing before and put him in the beginner league so he could be a superstar. It was on the sports station on the coast. Did anybody else hear this?</p>

I reverse my position. I was assuming, and still do, that she followed the rules in signing him up.

That would obviously change everything and make me lose a lot of respect for ESPN and any other news source that's been feeding us complete ******** on this story.

It's amazing that anyone still has respect for most media these days. What matters lately is the scoop, not whether it's accurate or not.
