<span style="font-size: small; font-family: trebuchetms, geneva;">"We are in the quiet phase of the fundraising for the facility and we are actively pursuing donations as we speak for the facility," Byrne said.</span>

...can someone explain wtf the "quiet phase" in fund raising is? What advantages can be gotten from keeping a fund raising drive quiet? Is this Byrne's idea?

it means they are talking with 4 or 5 individuals with severe semolians to try and get them to want their name on the facility. When thye secure the big chunks of cash, THEN the "loud" phase will be activated. When they come after all alumni and friends for some "smaller" donations to round out the price tag.

...once Templeton was fired and we wouldn't need the cigar boys anymore. Hell, several people on here have doubled their BC contributions just because of it. What do we need the big donors for anymore?

Normally for a building campaign such as this it is common to have a list of several individuals that you think can give a sizable donation to ensure the project can even be done. Its embarrassing to officially announce a fundraising goal and start to solicit donations only to fail to even remotely meet that goal.

...the way we do things or the way OM seems to do things. They (at least seem to) decide what they want to build, what they want it to look like and what features they want it to have and then set about raising the money for it. They hit a few bumps in the road such as their IPF being delayed and their baseball expansion being scaled back.

We try to raise money for a project without having any concrete plans for what the end result will be, rather we have a rough outline for what we hope to get accomplished.

In any case, our philosophies appear to be polar opposites when it comes to facility construction and improvements.

silent phase to either:

A. Unveil the specific plans to only the targeted donors so they get that warm feeling that they are special

or

B. Tell the donor that with enough money they can have a say in the design? I know the hunter henry center design was supposedly chosen by henry himself from about 3 alternatives.

A friend of mine heard Byrne speak during Super Bulldog Weekend. Byrne said the new practice facility would be between 3 and 15 million. WTF? My first reaction is that is a pretty wide range. My second thought is if we are going to do it, let's do it right. I believe UK spent 30 million on theirs so ours should at least be 10 million. My other thought is where are they going to put this thing.

Say on a 4 mill project, you would break your fundraising goal down like this.

"Quiet Phase"
(1) 1 million donor
(2) 500k donors
(2) 250K donors

Once you secure those then you open it up to the rest of the smaller donors. That way it looks like you are well on your way to your goal and not failing miserably.

just go get some money and throw up whatever we can just to say we did it.

Most schools wait and make sure they can do it the right way. This thing could be so neat but I wouldn't doubt that it will be Palmeiro Center with 6 goals.

The church I attend recently announced a $9M debt retirement campaign. They had $2M - $3M committed before they ever announced the campaign publicly. That's just the way fundraising works.

....in fact, the area on which we hope to build a facility is just south of the hump across the parking lots (Howell Ag & Bio Engineering). The AD says the university should pay for demo work (which I understand could cost up to 1M) but the University says fat chance.

I just have to believe it'd be easier to solicit funds... even from the major donors... if they were able to see site plans, architectural renderings, etc.. Currently we have none of that.

Which in their case was plenty good. Heck, the building was built a few years ago.</p>
