I recently read this article on a news letter I am subscribed to about The State of College Football. It was a really interesting read. It talked about how the problem is how college is so intertwined with culture that the conference realignment has basically destroyed hundreds of traditions. I’m curious on what yall think about the state of college football. If you want to read the article you can read it here.

Here I’ll change my approach. I made a Mississippi State Athletic newsletter. It shows a featured article about something college sports related, recent Mississippi State game analysis and some other little bits. Not monetized currently just a passion project.

Awesome. So in that case......

Rivalries are about like everything else from the old era of college football. Bowls, regionality, tribalism. Still a part of it, but de-emphasized. Just another game that you want to win, maybe a tad bit more than the others. Gone are the days of "we can go 11-1 but if we lose to Rival U the season is a fAiLuRe!" Pretty much only 2 groups of people still think that way, 1 - people over 60, and 2 - fans of the team that beat the 11-1 team (but likely didn't make the playoff, like say, Michigan this year).

Firstly I appreciate your input even after I self promoted. Genuinely I do. And as much as I wish the game was still centered the traditions, regionality and tribalism that way of the game is just no more like you said. Human nature to not like change but it has to happen.

Correct, change is apparent. Maybe this change is what younger fans want. Because let's be honest, what older people opine for is the tribalism, the 'us vs them', aspect of it. Portal hurts in this way, you can't even pretend that these are 'your guys'. And it seems students today care less about it than ever before, except for how it affects their next party. They just move on.

The days of 'following the program' and getting worked up over it are gone. The traditional signing days, crazy January visits, all gone. Hanging by a thread over a recruit, Chad Story pissing himself, etc. What TV has done is create this simple entertainment platform. It used to be about much more than that. But hey, the $$ says different. I mean I just described the NFL - entertainment - and they are the biggest sports business on the planet.

I still think, that even with rev share (or maybe especially with rev share)......if they'd work the portal back, and make you sit for a year again pre-graduation......that would restore order. It would work well with the 5 years of eligibility that we're about to receive. Then, fans that care about the program, but are disenfranchised with the sport in general....would come back. Just my theory. It would make it more 'college' again.

And for God's sake, fix the playoff by either going to 16 or taking out conference title byes. You can't really stabilize conference realignment, is what it is.

This paragraph fixes it all. I'm all about them getting paid.

I quit reading after you wrote, "The SEC now boasts 20 teams, including Texas and Oklahoma...".

There’s no doubt in my mind that much of what’s happened over the last 2-3 years has moved college football closer to being a pro sport, and that alone has lowered my interest level.

However, if State was in OM’s shoes, and we had been knocking on the door of the CFP all season long, there’s no way that I can pretend that I wouldn’t have eaten it up. I guess the way I’m looking at it now is that when State’s bad, I will no longer feel some obligation to the school/team to watch, attend, or give money. However, when State’s good, I will still enjoy the hell out of it
