I know the rule and all that...blah blah blah. However, there is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. On the play, Emmanwori had stopped. He was not making any movement towards the ball carrier. Yes, Emmanwori lowered his helmet, but he was not moving. The offensive player lowered HIS helmet and ran into Emmanwori. So, so how can it be targeting when the offensive player lowers his helmet into the defender's helmet and initiates contact? Again, in the spirt of the law.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the spirit vs the letter. It fit the description for targeting, but was probably not intended.

Yeah, it was definitely not intentional on his part and it was only targeting b/c the ball carrier lowered his head and initiated contact.

Should be a penalty for an offensive player to lower his head and initiate contact. The physics and the dangers are the same.

I'll die on this hill.......

The targeting call, in and of itself, is one of the worst things to ever happen to organized athletics. All the powers that be needed to do was start calling a penalty that's been in the books for a long time....spearing, which is when you use your helmet as a weapon. 15 yd penalty & first down. Targeting calls aren't necessary. Call spearing.

Hard to argue with that.
