be a 3.53 on SportsCenter....I wonder if the guy can catch a pass....If I'm New England, i'm getting him in camp to play opposite Moss...Now that would be stretching the field...just teach him the Go route and how to beat press coverage

that time is totally damn retarded. no doubt he should be in pads if he can catch. it would be interesting to see if a quarterback could get him the ball though.</p>

I don't buy it. I can see low 4's, but he doesn't start pulling away until he hits his stride. By the time he hits his stride he's almost run 40 yards. Now if they start timing him after he has hit his full stride then I can see 3.53 in the 40.

He gets off to an "average" start, relative to world class sprinters, pulls away in the middle part, and coasts in the last 25 meters or so.

I agree with this statement. They say that he has a terrible start, but makes up for it in his stride and breakaway speed.

3.53 is not humanly possible at this stage of our existence.

My guess is what they did is take his full time over 200 meters or 100 meters and then convert it into 40 yards.

That's not a 40 time. He may run a sub-4.2 in the 40, but I doubt anyone could break a 4.0 under any circumstances. If you timed Darren McPhadden in a 100 meter and then divided it into a 40 time, it would probably be sub-4.0 as well.

In any sprint, part of the sprint is done under acceleration and part of it is run at top speed. In the 40 yard dash, more of it is done accelerating than at top speed. In the 200m, the majority of it is at top speed - certainly a much more so than the 40yd dash. So the average speed in the 200m is heavily skewed by the runner's top speed.

So using a 200m time to extrapolate a 40yd time is sort of like giving a guy a running start for the 40yd dash. Its just not right or accurate.

Dan Patrick clarified this on his radio show. He said 3.53 was the fastest 40 yard span Bolt covered during his 100M Gold Medal run, but he actually ran the first 40 yards in something like 4.22 seconds. Still fast as Hell, but not as mind boggling as the 3.53 number that the World Wide Leader was trying to lead you believe.

Exactly, and I don't doubt that Bolt could probably break a 4.2 if he was being electronically timed, but there is no way any human could break a 4.0, much less get near 3.53 seconds.

There are plenty of guys in the NFL that can run a 40 in under 4.0 if you time them only at top speed, but no one can run a 40 that fast from start to finish.

Usain is 6' 6", 225 lbs. He'll be hard to chuck. Plus, he's got the cockiness to actually believe he could catch a ball thrown 3 feet above him.
