It is just completely befuddling how bad they have been. The offense has been riddled with injuries but have at least kept us somewhat in games. The defense has had nowhere near any types of injuries.
I truly think if we look back at it, the only time we have had a good defense was when we had Ellis Johnson as the DC. Look at it all: Wally Buhrnam - Awful; Charlie Strong - average but was known as third and long charlie strong. John Thompson/Tyron Nix - putrid. Tyron Nix - wet paper bag defense that let Tebow and McFadden set records, FINALLY Ellis Johnson and we have great defense with great players. Then Lorenzo Ward - really, really bad and was a culture killer with coaches he brought in to work with him (Deke Adams and Kurt Botkin fighting on sideline ring a bell?). We even had Jon Hunt at end of Spurrier era and that was not really anything to sing about as I almost forgot him. We then get T-Rob and we thought we would at least have good defenses with he and Muschamp and they were ok at best but not really very good. Now we have Clayton White and he seems nice enough as a guy but it has gotten as bad as I have ever seen it and looking at the DC line we have gone through, that is saying ALOT!!!
I always hate to see good people lose their jobs but if they are not successful, things have to change. I think if Beamer makes the change he really, really has to go get the best DC he can find and Ray needs to make sure we dont go cheap because it is time we get a decent defense. One good defensive coordinator in last 30 years is not a good track record. Who could we get? Not sure but several we could pursue such as Heacock at Iowa St. He has done great there and that program is in complete disarray. The DC at James Madison has been consistent and good but then again we may be going the Clayton White route. I am not sure who else would come but Heacock may be a good one to try for.

I'd take Ellis back this afternoon. The man could coach D. He looks like a DC, too.
