@massimoManca II

MMII - I followed your input and advice regarding an SUV purchase a few years ago. That was in 2015 when I bought a Mazda CX-5, at least in part due to your recommendations. It is still going strong at 107K miles. I am keeping that SUV and looking to buy or lease without trading in. Don't want a smaller SUV, so no smaller than a CX5. I'm open to the larger, 3rd row seat models if they are worth the extra costs. But I really need just the basic, two seats with decent cargo space.

I've looked at Car&Driver and KellyBB and other online input, so I have a decent idea of what is being said online. However, not having any great car knowledge myself, I know that sometimes the best advice comes from the guys who follow it all very closely, above and beyond the online information. If that input matches up, all the better, but I'm not taking that for granted.

MMII and others - your expert input is welcome. Many thanks in advance.

I have a 2016 CX-5 that I absolutely love. I put Apple CarPlay in it last fall so it's even better. I'm not really familiar with many 3rd row SUVs although my sister and BIL have a Kia Sportage (I think) that has a third row. I think it's a 2013 or 2014. They seem to like it.

fyiw I have 2018 GMC Acadia, it has 3 rows of seats if you want them or 2 rows and cargo room, which is easily convertible. I like it, does everything you want, plus all the bell and whistles. Now the biggest problem is finding a full bench seat for the back seat (not third row). My dog likes to spread out, I made him a filler between the seats to help out!

How would someone access the 3rd row if the second row was a full bench?

We have a 2012 Kia Sorrento AWD with a third row and 246,000 miles on it and we love it. It’s finally starting to show its age, but it’s been absolutely awesome and I’d definitely get another Kia. Check ‘em out.

I bought a 2021 Chevy Traverse last year- three rows of seats, I almost always have the third row folded down which gives me loads of cargo room. Pros include
good performance and handling and a very good ride. Infotainment system is also very good. It handles snow well, too. I really like the driving position. Headlights and fog lights are very good also.

Cons- gas mileage is ok, not class leading. Styling is pretty generic, which is ok with me but it's not something that stands out in a crowd if you care about that kind of thing.

I’ve researched and test driven almost all of them in the last 3 months. Why don’t you tell us which ones you like the looks of and I can give you a breakdown. We are searching for a hybrid SUV but my wife is very picky.

I too have been car shopping with very little luck. I went to Nissan and looked at a rogue. The price was 28k with a 7K market adjustment. The motor has been downsized to a 3cyl turbo. I looked at a Toyota Highlander which was very comfortable, had very good power and decent gas mileage. Unfortunately, the same story here with a $33k sticker and another 8k in market adjustment. I need my current car to last me another 2.5 years and at that point I know prices will stabilize.

On the smaller side. We have a 2019 Ford Escape. I know, I know....BUT, wife and I both love it. Zero issues so far. I wanted to swap vehicles with her recently and she flat out turned me down.

Bought a used Honda Pilot right before prices went through the roof and it has been fantastic. V6 averaging about 26 mpg overall. Roomy and extremely driveable.

I didn't mention the few that I'm currently favoring so that I wouldn't bias the responses.

I mentioned I looked online at Car&Driver, KBB, and a few others. The ones that I am leaning toward as a result are the CX5, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Kia Telluride. But, if someone has input that gives other options to think about, I'm open. I'm in no big rush.

I have a 2013 Explorer with three rows of seats. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. 110,000 on it and has, knock wood, been bullet proof. I’d buy another one in a second. Only thing that makes me nervous is that the new ones are almost all turbos. I’d much rather have naturally aspirated but seems the world be changing - I hate that!

Do turbo engines require premium gas?

I guess I'll be that guy... I have a third row 4Runner... gas mileage abysmal, but the wife loved how it looked and so here we are. It's fun to drive.

Wife drives s a QX60 which has the 3rd row. Nice on road trips as we have 2 in the middle row and my son in the back with a cargo carrier up top for most of our bags. I'm sure some are better with gas mileage, but we work from home so it wasn't the deciding factor for us We were looking at the Pilot as well, but it was her car and her call as I like the Pilot just as much.

All these boring SUVs make me feel dead inside.
Try at the very least to get a fun one

Fun review to watch but Alphas are notoriously unreliable. A Porche would be a better choice in that range. Or any of the German alternatives - Mercedes, Audi, BMW for those seeking a premium SUV. Maybe even a Range Rover if money is no object.

Drive German
Dress Italian
Eat French
Drink Irish (or maybe Scotch)

I have a 2021 Hyundai Palisade Caligraphy, white with black interior, and it's awesome. I've had it 16 months and 30k miles, and still love it as much today as the day I got it. Also, if I sold it today, I would get more than I bought it for. Now I know there are a lot of factors at play there, but part of the reason is that the car is so great.

That's about as ugly a car as I've seen. It's a friggin hatchback looking POS. That's the mullet of car design. My Buick Enclave does a nice 85-90 on the highway quite nicely, and it's big enough to block all the motorsicles, rice rockets and middle-aged men with a pocket full of Viagra who are trying to create dangerous driving conditions. It's quiet and comfy. I get my "fun" in other ways (and I don't need Viagra to do so).

Audis are awesome but have terrible sight lines. Ranger Rovers are trash. Only a-holes drive Porsches. BMWs are hype. I like the Infiniti QX60 (or QX80 if you want to be obnoxious). The Maserati Levante is intriguing.

I don’t think any 3rd row seat models are worth the extra cost... not to mention it sounds like you don’t particularly need one... unless you are breeding like rodents, or , you have acquired a gaggle of runny-nose grandkids - that 3rd row is dead weight / cu ft party-ruiner anyway... FWIW 15+ yrs ago when I had two young kids and that hot, ***-kicking minivan - the # of occasions i needed/used that third row was only slightly > than the number of times i enjoyed group sex...

as you know, the only reason to be car-shopping right now is that you're being held at gunpoint, and given what you’ve shared above , I shouldn’t have to mention you can summarily disregard the typical BWI dick-wagging responses suggesting Alfas, Porsches, Audis, Genesis, Webers, Big Green Eggs, Airstreams, Gulfstreams, Infiniti and stupid BMWs...

if you really need a third row, i’ll piss on your Tevas by recommending a base Odyssey or the (even uglier) Sienna ... good luck finding either, as the few shopping for these are willing to pay for all of the useless vanity tack-ons, but you might find one growing moss on a dealer lot.. .. or, a Mazda retailer might get a boner should someone walk in their store asking about the Cx-9. Those talking about Telluride are onto something (though i haven‘t been in one) , they are kinda chunky and I understand these are subject to waiting lists and dealer markup > MSRP... no reason to avoid Kia and Hyundai as the value is real... and they cut an impressive form, unlike many other offerings out there

my approach would be to look for value in an undesirable model ... eg. a FWD crossover - rare as hen’s teeth, but tends to collect moss because shoppers are groomed to believe they absolutely need AWD... retailers might be willing to bargain and the thousands you save can go toward winter tires and next January you can zip past all those Explorers flipped over in the median

4runners are genuine trucks (good ones) as opposed to a cosplaying Camry ... but I would not suggest one as they are very expensive trucks and I don’t want/need to daily a truck... particularly with $5.00 gas... Toyotas are so goddamned ugly, the entire line, that i would keep me away... unfortunately I’ve been waiting for a ‘22 RAV4 company car to replace my underwhelming ‘19 company Legacy... so I’ll have to keep from puking in my driveway every morning

a sleeper might be the VW Tiguan ... VW’s MQB platform is excellent, they can be had with FWD, they have a good 4cyl , my experience is that interior quality in VW beats the Japs, higher trims even offer that 3rd row... unfortunately VW drew back the 72k factory warranty down to 50k mi. a couple years ago...

i’ve been vocal ad-nauseum here about my personal experience with Subarus and that they were the luckiest automobile mfr out there , they are simply ok... i’ll leave it at that...

good luck... let us know how it works out

If you're a parent, and your kids are involved in sports/activities, or have any friends or lives at all, a 3rd row is essential. A minivan is not an option, unless you lack testicles.

I have been driving Subaru Outbacks for over 20 years. Never a mechanical problem
My current Subaru is a 2020 mod. After 18 months I needed a new battery. Some high tech instruments never go to sleep thus drain the battery.
It's the same with my sister-in-law. She swears by her Subarus, and we'll be looking at those when it comes time to replace Mrs. KG's 2003 CR-V--which she still loves but which is getting creaky (issues with power locks, for example).

I always appreciate your insight, and the great snarky humor about all things with engines is worth the price of admission!

One thing I admit to as a non-car guy... I have to really pay attention to which SUV is which looks-wise. To me, there are so many similarities across the makes that until I see the logo, I'm easily stumped. So talk about ugly ones vs great looking ones is rather lost on me. If a certain poster would run a beauty bracket contest for SUVs, I'd have to sit idly by and watch others play.

Third row is great for sports, road trips, and anytime we have people in town. Every third row we looked at also folds down so it's not really a space thing either. My wife had an Odyssey for a quite a few years and when the 2 kids got older she wanted out so this was our best option for us, but others certainly may not need it.
