Full disclosure, I missed parts of the third quarter and the last 5 minutes of the game. Had to attend a function, so I had to get myself ready - and that is a hell of a chore.

1. First quarter, Tinsley made two great plays that really helped the QBs. Clifford has taken a lot of heat, but one thing that he has missed this year is a receiver that can get the 50/50. He had Dotson before, McSorely had Godwin and Blacknall, Hackenberg had Godwin (notably in the Pinstripe Bowl) and Robinson (notably the Michigan White Out game).

2. First quarter defense was annoying - leaving the middle open, and they can't get pressure on the QB. That was rectified later in the game.

3. Nice running by Allen. He has really stepped up the last few games. Could be Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

4. Nice OL work by true freshman Drew Shelton. With Fashanu out, Nourzad out and Worley not playing as well as he was earlier, he did yeoman's work.

5. Defense played a hell of a game after the first quarter, albeit with an overmatched opponent. Keeping any Big Ten team to less than 200 yards total offense is no small feat. After the first TD, the defense gave up 8 total yards until the very end of the game. 6 sacks, and 16 TFLs? That is amazing.

6. Not sure if I saw DDS in the first half. I know he played in the second, but not sure if he had any run early on.

7. Why was Brenton Strange's catch not one of the best of the week? It was reminsicent of a catch by an Alabama WR a few years ago where he pinned the ball against the back of a MIss State defender.

8. I think the commentators were spot on about the difference between OSU and PSU - it's a first round QB. We can hope Allar is it. Although I think there is lot more than that, and they oversimplified the reason for the difference. By the way, it got so boring for them they started talking about chocolates/candy. That made me hungry. I was amused when Orlovsky said he hated Dallas Cowboys.

9. Even in the 25 mph wind, Manny Diaz' hair is perfect. Wonder if he ever drank a Pina Coloda at Trader Vic's?

10. I thought IU's Williams (#5) played well all things considered. Their starting QB however knew when to tuck the ball and run. He exploited the soft middle of PSU defense based on his experience.

11. Like watching Dominic DeLuca play - kids is scrappy.

12. Was a little concerned about the injuries in the first quarter.

13. Overall, just a good win. Kind of win PSU needed, especially given that IU has been a bit of a thorn in the side over the years - they always play PSU fiesty. It was nice to see the team put IU away early. This was how they had to start the final 1/3 of the season.

Great Post Game Summation as always!

When I heard the commentators comments about the difference between OSU/PSU was just a 1st RD QB I was like yeah thats a little bit of a reach...need a few players hear and there ;)

Yea, I thinks it’s a QB plus some really good recruiting classes to build depth. I think a healthy Penn State can compete with anybody. The top echelon just has more depth of talent.

Depth is very important but here are a few other factors we don't often mention or some may not be aware of;
  1. Not all 4*s are 4*s ;) same for 5* same for 3*
  2. The aforementioned Need to be developed
  3. Our Recruiting classes have been good really, not consistently Top 4-5 classes like the Elite teams, but thats the problem-see point #1

I think it's been a welcome sight that our youthful OL are stepping in and playing well. With other youthful players and backups. You had 2 official starters in there yesterday with Scruggs and Wormley and Wormley wasn't 💯. Did Vega get any reps with the 1s? I missed the entire second half.

Our back field is going to be dangerous next year. Allen plays like Le'Veon Bell or Alvin Kamara. Another year getting stronger, faster, look out. Singleton still needs the seasoning Allen already had, but you can see his improvement.

Kudos to the defense. Indiana might have been outgunned from the get-go, but this is how you dominate an opponent. All considering, we return practically 12+ guys with a lot of snaps next year. Brown, JPJ, Tarburton and PJ barring any unforeseen departures.

And I think Allar being put out in that situation with the score out of reach and having a more than a few series was great!

I've been a very big critic of CJF ever since the Illinois game last year. I was impressed with both the wins against Minnesota and Indiana yesterday in that the team avoided any let down after a loss. Great to see. Also great to see Allar get some quality playing time yesterday. Franklin looked engaged yesterday. I credit CJF and the rest of the coaching staff.

Can anyone explain the officials' change of mind re: the IU illegal substitution penalty? I thought the ref said it was a live ball foul and they shouldn't have blown the whistle. But Penn State lost the benefit of the 5 yard penalty (and first down) AND IU ended up not being penalized at all. That can't be right. And since when is illegal substitution a live ball foul. They always blow the whistle to stop action when there's an illegal substitution. Didn't understand that at all.

I think the only explanation is that the officials screwed up. IU had too many guys on the field, and the officials got them out of it by stopping the play without assessing a penalty.

I think Rutgers had the exact same penalty last night. MI ran the play then a 5 yard penalty.

Agreed...although Minnesota and Indiana should not be considered "difficult" wins, and the team should not suffer a let down after any loss. And Franklin should look "engaged" always. I also give credit to JF and the staff for getting it done against Indiana with the caveat that "they were just doing their job." And I would've liked to see all that against Michigan and OSU. In that case, we could be looking at not just a very good but indeed a truly magnificent season.

Allar looked very good yesterday. He shows tremendous promise. Cliff did a good job as well, did have the one obligatory INT but it really didn't impact the game. Running game looked good and the defense had a tremendous series of plays where they really had Indiana on their heels. I hadn't seen that kind of performance in awhile.

Inconsistency is still an issue. There was less of it yesterday.

Overall, a fine effort. Hope JF and the staff can continue to "exhort the troops" and set the stage for a special season next year.

Shelton stepping as a true freshman was very nice to see yesterday.

Shelton, Vega, Tengwall all Freshmen or RS would have the OL pointed towards finally being a team strength

Would like to more consistently beat these types of teams like yesterday. We did see some improvements:

- Young DL made some plays
- Not sure our backup OL plays like this a few years ago
-Koby King getting better each game
-Secondary plays a lot of guys without much drop off in play
- Nick started running like a power back yesterday as game went on
-DA can obviously sling it. Have to believe we will see less 8 man in the box next year.

Kobe King had a beautiful 5 yard TFL in the first half. It looked a little bit like the game is slowing down for him. He read the play and ran it down fast.

5. Maybe it wasn't the first quarter, so forgive me but....the sequence after the Clifford INT...IU QB did a slide for a first down inside the 20, the defense played lights out. Went from 1st down in the red zone to out of FG range. Kept IU from going up 10-7 or 14-7.

I'm not saying IU wins, but momentum is a funny thing and if IU takes a lead there maybe the game gets a lot tougher.

Kudos to the D.

I could have perfect hair like Manny Diaz, but I choose not to.

Any concern Diaz could bolt after a 10/11 win season? That would be rough. But, he seems like a guy who wants to be a HC somewhere...

I noticed this as well. I think right now Allen is more trustworthy because he's more consistently picking up yards, and he seems to have better vision, patience and runs through traffic better. Singleton is faster, has insane acceleration and is a home run threat in space. But later in the game Singleton showed some of the physical traits running through traffic that I thought Allen was better at, which was great to see. If he picks up that vision and gets more physical while keeping his speed, he's going to be really special.

I think you're talking about a different series. You're talking about the one where the IU QB started his slide too early and didn't get the first down.

I'm talking about right afford Clifford's INT. IU got a 1st down right around the 15 yard line, then went backwards from there and ended up punting.
