1. Nice that in this final run for the season, the squad came out and really hammered another opponent. This game was over halfway through the second quarter, for all intents and purposes. Much easier, from a fan perspective, then having nail biters.

2. I would love to be able to watch the competition in practive between Singleton and Allen. They must be so close, in order for the staff to pick one or the other to start. That said, I also feel Singleton ran with much more aggressiveness and purpose this game. Lowered his shoulders more and took it to the defenders. Anyone else notice that they tend to run Allen to the left and Singleton to the right (more often than not, but not all the time). Yurcich's full house backfield is now a favorit of mine. Sometimes you just have to pound it out.

3. Not sure what happened with Amor. I don't think he was seen again after the roughing the punter call. But, Barchetta came in and did an admirable job. And, can still preseve his redshirt.

4. Kudos to Trautwein for having the OL ready. This defense is better than Indiana's but the offense, in the running game, did not miss a step. 450 yards in the last two games is pretty damn good. Starters out or playing banged up, shuffling players around and having a freshman start - and they still controlled the LOS. I have been on Trautwein and thought he should have been let go, but he has put together a good line this year. Only one sack in the last two games.

5. Defense- what can you say? What a great, great game by them. Especially the line. The Maryland Offensive Line is better than Indiana's but they just controlled from the opneing series. Did Durant start at tackle? He made the first bg play on the first series. As much as we talk about Singleton, Allen, Allar and Carter, do not overlook the freshman Durant as a positive contributor. Holding a Big Ten team to a total of 134 yards is really a major accomplishment. It was good to see Zuriah Fisher on the field at the end. Making a good recovery from his injury. Taulia had been sacked 14 times in the previous games, but got sacked 7 times by PSU. And keep in mind, Maryland played the Big Bad Wolverines and they did not sack him like PSU did (because they don't have the vaunted Don Brown anymore I guess). It was not until near the end of the third quarter that Maryland had more offensive yards than penalty yards. That said, I don't think they got any penalties in the first half. A shut out against any Big Ten opponent should not be overlooked. Kobe King has really showed up in the last few games. Also - how about that closing speed by Carter against Taulia - not sure who would be faster, him or Parsons (or Arrington), but he really closed the game on their QB on a designed roll out in the second quarter.

6. For Maryland, their #54 and their defensive #1 (Barham, who PSU wanted), played well. Especially #54. Additinoally, Hemby is going to be good for them. Seems like a solid player.

7. At least we did not have to listen to Gus Johnson talking about the World Famous Ohio State. But this announcing crew - did they do their homework? They got the players names wrong or misidentifeid the players. I will agree with them that it was impressive crowd considering the weather. Of the 5 biggest CFB stadiums, I belive Penn State is the furthest from a major metropolitan area (Harrisburg and Altoona don't count). And yet, fans still make the trek.

8. None of the quarterbacks impressed me on Saturday. It seemed like a few passes were high - even some of the shotgun snaps. Not sure if it was weather related. I did think that CJF would go to Allar after the TV camera showed him talking to Allar before end of first half. Clifford did seem to pick it up after that discussion - not sure if he saw it or not. I also think both secondaries really played tight coverage. I will give Maryland's defensive secondary credit also for their coverage. With JPJ out (although he shows up in the participation sheet), I think we got a great game from the other members of the secondary.

9. On Singletons two TD runs, the TEs did yeoman's work in blocking. Warren, who had not been heard from much in the last few games, really stayed on his block on Singleton's first run.

10. Kudos to Pinegar. I still had my doubts, but he made the kicks when he had to.

11. I did not like the three unsportsmanlike penalties. The two on the players were just stupid and at sometime, it's gonna create a problem. The team had the game in had, so there is no need for chirping. This is not enough of a rivalry to seriously dislike that team. It's just a game you have to play. Conversely, I was OK with CJF's unsportsmanlike, once he explained it. Kind of like a basketball coach getting a technical on himself rather than a member of the team getting one. He was right - they were holding Strange all game and it was not called once. I am impressed he can do 15 push ups. I could not. I am sure that will be the focus of some of his critics though. Perhaps someone can even twist it so they can take a benign issue like this and think that CJF was making it all about him? And then be offended by it.

12. OK once again - Manny Diaz's hair. Just wow. I hope Diaz sticks around, but if he leaves, I hope his hair sticks around. That said, I did hear that at least one program has called. But not sure if it would be worth the jump for Diaz. It's in a P5, but not a major program.

13. I can't believe anyone would not love Tank Smith. Kid just pounds. With Lee out (and perhaps not coming back), your third stringer is a walk on who is 5'7" and 226 lbs. Nice. Like trying to tackle a fire hydrant. I hope that this non scholarship kid gets to score a TD - I don't think he has one this year.

14. So, a solid win, with a strong running game, a QB who was a good game manager, execptional defense, and solid kicking game. Somewhere up in the heavens a smart aleck kid from Brooklyn is smiling and sipping his bourbon. Because that is the way he liked doing it.

15. Oh, and lest you guys think I have not paid attention.....Center Judge Amada Sauer....

Had a busy day yesterday with friends and Napa reds, so watching the game today. Was the two TE one RB formation on offense to help offset OL issues? Don’t recall seeing it before this year.

Reallllllly hope Diaz sticks around.

On the defensive side of the ball, I think it showed the amount of preparation involved that they just teed off on the Twerps o-line the entire first half. They saw a weakness on broadband (cuz who watches film anymore?) and hammered it. You could have watched, not knowing beforehand that Porter was out, and not noticed he wasn't there. Diaz had that side of the ball on point and the d-line depth has been very impressive.

Offensively, I think they could have run the ball on every play and won this game easily. The Twerps secondary was locked on to our receivers and I don't know whether it was routes run or play calls or what but there wasn't much separation and that caused a lot of Clifford's inaccuracy. It still would be nice to work the RBs on screens or flares because getting them out into open space is such an asset with their speed and power. Though, the one they tried to Singleton was pretty messed up and I'm not sure if that was because of a bad route run, poor throw, or decent coverage.

Best part -- they smacked down a lesser opponent and put them away quick, much like they did with Indiana.

Good write up. I agree with the post above that Durant came in for third down as part of the pass rush set. Bit confused about the penalty on Franklin. First explanation was he accidentally ran into an official on the sidelines. Also heard he was yelling some profanities at one of his players (potentially Clifford) and the official thought it was directed at him. Your post indicates he was yelling at ref for holding on Strange. Immediately after, he went to Allar and asked if he was ready, leading me to believe the second option. Also explains why he did the push-ups (in press conference he said everyone is accountable) and why he kept Clifford in so long (Franklin was embarrassed by his outburst). Saw a report on the female ref Amanda a year or two ago on the BIG Ten network highlighting her being a role model. Included a bit on her wife and daughter as well if I recall correctly.

Nice summary and thank you for sharing.

I was doing just fine reading down your list until I hit item #14 where you used those dreaded back handed compliment words “good game manager” to describe our starting QB.

I never laughed so hard! You have captured the essence of Clifford’s ceiling and his legacy.

I guess the diamond set.

Against Ohio State, I think the plan with this set was throwing.

Since then, it's been primarily a running set, but has good play action. Defense has to line up and defend it without a strong side being shown by the offense. Definitely to help the run game. Our backs run really well behind lead blocking. Our pull game has picked up as well.

I’m happy for Tank Smith, but just wish we ran a more varied offense when he’s in. (I know the games are out of hand bye then). Everyone knows we’re just going to hand off to him on virtually every play. Would love to see the stubby little fire plug shake his booty in the open field.

I have been watch PSU football since the last 1970s.....in those nearly 45 years, I would say Game Manager is the primary role of the QB at Penn State. Most of my time, obviously, is when Joe was around.

I don't say it as an insult or backhanded compliment. If the offense has a good running game, and a passing that game that can get 10-20 yards at a shot, the offense moves the ball. This is based on decent offensive line play. For most of Clifford's (and CJF's) time here, the offensive line has not been very good. And so the running game has only been good for about half the time CJF has been here (Barkley and Sanders) So "explosive" plays were the primary weapon.

Great point. When Joe had a team with a solid running game, a quarterback that didn‘t make mistakes, good kicking, and a superior defense we were in for a fun season. Like this one.

I was texting with LdN about this during the game. Our hunch is that Manny is a short timer at Penn State. His defense is leaps and bounds better than anything we've had. He'll be pursued heavily for other jobs and really doesn't seem like a State College type. That may not happen this offseason but it will soon.

Twice over the past several months I've asked on the premium board if anyone knew if Manny's family accompanied him to State College. ZERO response. I find it hard to believe none of those guys know the answer to that question - State College is a very small town in that regard and I would be shocked if none of the insiders knew the answer to that question. Then, after the whiteout game, there was an on field camera showing the team and coaches celebrating. Quite few of the coaches had their wives and family with them. It was also noticeable that Manny was walking around without any family members with him.

I realize this is all very circumstantial, but based upon my limited "internet investigation", I would say that his family probably remained behind in SFLA and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a one and done with Manny. Oh well, he's certainly done a great job this year.

Understood and thank you for your clarification. In today’s modern era, PSU needs talented difference makers at the QB position. Game managers with limited capabilities like Clifford are not enough to defeat the better teams like OSU and Michigan. Also, Journey Brown is missing from your list of great RBs during the coach Franklin era. The only time period where PSU had a horrendous running game was during the Holmes, Lee, and Devyn Ford period.

My thoughts on this staff are well documented, but Manny seems more capable than the rest of the staff.

He’s the only assistant who looks and acts “big time.” I imagine that feels tenuous for him beyond one season.

My two cents without any evidence is that Manny sees what is coming back next year and the potential for it to be a playoff team. I suspect he sticks around through next year which if successful lines him up for a high profile job. Plus it allows him to show he can defend Michigan and OSU. But as Joe used to say, “we want your money, but not your two cents “

One also has to think portal players will want to play in this defense. I could see some of the better players showing interest.

Good write up. I agree that neither QB looked good. As a slight defense of Allar, Franklin’s comments about him getting PR with the starters was interesting. Hard to get into a rhythm as a QB when you are playing with many backups which Allar was doing yesterday.

Why do a lot of PS fans ASSUME Manny will leave here . Maybe he likes being a DC and isn't interested in being a HC again, unless some school throws ludicrous money at him.

My other issue is this. Jim Knowles DC of the world famous Buckeyes and their world famous defense doesn't get a mention anywhere, even here along with Brian Hartline. LJ doesn't get a mention during televised games but seems to get giddy with wins over PSU. If Manny is a success here pay the man Nittany $$$$.

If he’s a one and done I wouldn’t have hired him if I were CJF.

Why? We can pay him like a low level assistant and let Miami pay the difference to get him to $8mm next year to be our DC.

"According to the Miami Herald Diaz has a contract that runs through 2023. The final two years of the Diaz contract were reportedly worth between $6.5 and eight million over the next two years according to Barry Jackson of the Herald. If Diaz is hired somewhere else that money would be diminished by his new salary."

At least for Franklin, turnover isn't just a challenge with players and the portal, its been a challenge with coordinators as well. Stability there would help tremendously. I realize it's unlikely we'll ever see tenure of assistants as we did under Paterno, but it would be great if coordinators remained more than 2 seasons.

One thing I will say about the penalties is there was a lot trash talking going on. MD was doing it the entire game and got away with some blatant holds and PF's on out of bounds plays. There was one Twerp trash talking and at that point they had -27 yards in the first half. Sometimes its better to shut up and do your job. I also think Franklin was pissed at some of the blown or missed calls.

Had a busy day yesterday with friends and Napa reds, so watching the game today. Was the two TE one RB formation on offense to help offset OL issues? Don’t recall seeing it before this year.

Reallllllly hope Diaz sticks around.
No they've used that since the Purdue game. Sometimes its Allen and Singleton and sometimes its 2 TE's on either side of Allen or Singleton.
Its a nice twist that MY has developed and then tweaked to get even more out of it. I expect to see some passes to the TE's out of it.

Well that's a bit of a paradox because you can't find out if he's one and done without hiring him. What happens, happens. The era of long-term coaching stability left the barn a long time ago so I just root for the guys that are here.

My only problem with that formation is that surely, somebody in the last hundred + years has come up with an easy way to defend it.

I want to see us pass out of that formation.

I’m happy for Tank Smith, but just wish we ran a more varied offense when he’s in. (I know the games are out of hand bye then). Everyone knows we’re just going to hand off to him on virtually every play. Would love to see the stubby little fire plug shake his booty in the open field.

I admitted I was hard on Trautwein but now also will sing his praises. There has been real improvement this year on the Oline. Have the possibility that all of them return next year. Plus some real studs coming in recruit wise. PSU will finally have talent and depth at the Oline position. They are also getting movement in the run game. So kudos to Coach Traut he deserves some credit this year. And looking forward to next year even more.
