Thoughts on this year

Way back at the beginning of the year I said that one of the most noticeable differences between this team and the others that we had the past three years would be the attitude. I think that was on display many times over this past year. Our talent was not the best in the world- or at least the SEC, but we never gave up and aside from a few blowouts we gave pretty much everyone a good, hard fought game this year. And usually after we had gotten blown out, we would come back and either win or play a lot better the next day.

Our seniors did a great job- I'm especially proud of Jarrod Parks because he is from Madison, my hometown. But, there are others like Nick Vickerson hitting an absolutely clutch home run that I think will be remembered for awhile at MSU, Wes Thigpen was solid, Jaron Shepherd got the game winning hit against LSU late in the year, Ogden played hurt a lot, and Ryan Collins- well, he wasn't great, but I've also seen worse.

And then we had some underclassmen step up such as Caleb Reed, CT Bradford has made some All-American teams, Evan Mitchell had some good stretches as did Daryl Norris, Brent Brownlee has had some big hits and flipped off some Arkansas fans who probably deserved it- what was really funny about it to me was he was laughing at them while he was shooting the bird. Adam Frazier has shown some promise, and it was good to see Nick Routt step up some with a great game against GT. Oh, and Luis Pollorena for shutting down USM twice- including once against Todd McInnis, who really and truly is a great college pitcher. Cody Freeman had a good year as well- I can't think of anything specific that he did that was spectacular, but he definately had a pretty good year.

The coaches overall did a pretty good job- did they do some questionable things at times? Sure. But so does every other coach in America. The bottom line is they took a team that was awful last year and picked to finish last and they not only had a winning season- they almost won the SEC West, and probably would have had we played UK, they lead this team to a regional win as a three seed, and then were less than nine outs away from going to Omaha. We also had four wins over top five teams- two of which were on the road. We also beat Ole Miss three out of four times, won the Governor's Cup and we beat USM twice including once in a regional is a game that was pretty hyped in Mississippi.

Now, there were some "If's" in that paragraph above, which means that we have room to get better. One of those "if's" was a schedule thing- well, that's just how it goes. We certainly dropped some games we should have won as well against the teams actually played. Another "if" was we got a tough draw for our SR- we have to win more games to get to where we can host a SR. We play most anybody at Dudy-Noble for a SR, and we're probably going to be the toughest team in America to beat in a SR because of our home field advantage, but we have to earn that by winning. Being a three seed isn't going to get that done. And as far as today, I feel like the main reason we lost today was because of our lack of pitching depth, which is getting better. And building that is part of building a team and a program. My thought late in the game was "man, it sure would be nice to have Ben Bracewell right now."

So, my goals for next year's team are to win the SEC West- "Do it for Stansbury!", continue to improve overall in all areas- pitching, defense, and hitting- which includes power, continue to recruit well, make the SEC Tournament and win at least one game, host a regional, win a SR, and go to Omaha and win a National Championship. We may not attain all of those goals, but this is what we need to aspire to.

This weekend was huge for us. And I think that even though we lost, we earned respect from people around the country in baseball circles. We had lost that over the last 10 years or so. I remember when the SR started- the ESPN people were talking about how we had no chance, how we weren't that good. And all we did was play Florida tooth and nail on the road and push them to the brink. I think we opened some eyes this weekend, and that is almost as good as winning in this case- and winning would have been the only thing better for us. But it's important because it will bring MSU people back in terms on interest, and I think it will help heal some wounds from when Polk left and some of our fans not wanting Cohen for whatever reason and more importantly, I think this will help in terms of recruiting. To get those top flight players like Florida and Vanderbilt have, you have to win and you have to put out a good product. The players we're getting right now are for the most part die hard MSU guys- which is not a bad thing at all, in fact we want them- but if we can surround those guys with some really top flight guys in terms of talent, then we're really cooking with gas. Also, as long as Cohen is here, we are going to have a hard nosed, scrappy team no matter what our talent level. Because those are the types of players that are going to want to play for him- but again, the key for us to find those hard nosed players that also have talent, such as CT Bradford.

All in all, I'm very optomistic about our baseball program and the direction that it is headed in. Next year, we certainly will be young and have some question marks, but we should still be pretty good, and then after next year, we have a chance to be really, really good once these players become experienced juniors and as we also continue to add talent.

Cohen mature a little bit as a coach as well. I don't have the numbers and I am sure someone will chime in but the last two weeks we seem to cut down on our gambling and baserunning mistakes and let the game come to us more than we did during the year. I think Cohen felt like we had gotten better especially with our pitching and he needed to modify his approach which I think paid off for us. I am much more comfortabletoday that Cohen may end up being a great coach than I was a month ago, I think he has it.

Were the result of a lack of talent. When you just can't compete head-to-head with a team, you have to take risks to try to close the gap. When it doesn't work, you look bad. Winning and talent eliminates that. I think we will always see that high pressure style, but there will be less risk-taking on the basepaths one we get some proven RBI producers in the lineup.

reminded me of the early Croom years in football. I can remember cheering for our team as they ran out of the locker room in 2004/2005, but then I'd take a glance at the opposing players and think, "Oh ****, we're about to get murdered." Likewise, I really can't remember watching a college baseball game where there seemed to be so much disparity in size(and possibly age). I don't know that they had a single player in the lineup that couldn't send it over the fence and nearly every pitcher they brought in looked like they could be 30 and playing linebacker for the football team.

Anyway, this isn't intended to be a shot at our team as much as it is a question as to how in the world did Florida put that group together? Also, with their mix of hitting and deep pitching, what odds do you put on them to win it all? I'd personally be very surprised if they don't make it to the championship game.

very good summary......think a lot of our intensity this year is the hard nosed driving personality of Coach Cohen(almost all the successful coaches have this, even tho it doesn't sit well with some fans)...some kids will play for him and some won't, but those who will make a difference in the long run...still can't figure out how a 9th overall pick in the MLB draft chose to play at Florida instead of taking the big bucks(or maybe I can)...when we can get those type players here, nobody in the country will be able to hang with us...

a really good synopsis of the season. I'd like to add how well most of the Jr College guys performed for us, especially this year. Alot of fans were down on this group, but they showed leadership and almost got us to Omaha. Secondly, Cohen is a redass and these type of coaches can really either make you hardnosed or make you leave. This team responded and played tough baseball. We need to keep recruiting and keep building so that we can be a favorite to get to Omaha every year.

We are losing some great hitters this year in Vickerson, Parks, and Ogden (Collins didn't do terrible, just his percentage with RISP needed to be better... I thought he caught way more hell than he deserved... he was a beast at 1B). <div>
</div><div>I think our pitching is going to get better over time. Thompson was a good hire for us. I think given some time to work with these guys, we are going to have a pitching staff that can compete at the SEC level week in and week out. This past weekend showed that we do have good pitching, we just don't have enough of it. Asking Reed to come in was questionable, but I'm glad he pulled him after 1 inning. He has an arm that I think we need to do everything we can to protect. Pollerena, I think, needs to be worked back in as a reliever. He has the heart and drive of a lion and I think his emotional fire works best coming out of the pen. </div><div>
</div><div>Overall, we made some big strides this year. I was glad to see our team compete and play scrappy. Playing with that chip on your shoulder like you have something to prove is certainly the most consistent mindset you can have in sports (just ask Mullen). I look forward to seeing us get better as the years pass, and I think we are going to see MSU Baseball compete on a national stage more often. We certainly showed this week we deserve to be there, taking number 2 Florida, with all their fantastic hitting and pitching (despite their douchy attitude), down to the wire twice this weekend on national tv. And I believe you are correct in saying that we showed the country that we, not only deserve to play at that level, we can compete with the best in the country week in and week out. </div>

I am hoping that 3-4 years from now, we will look back at this past weekend as the catalyst to getting back to competing for SEC titles year in and out. The exposure we received on ESPN will do nothing but greatly help. We have to recruit and sign guys that may get drafted high out of high school. This is what Florida, Vandy, and South Carolina have done. You may lose some to the draft, but over a few years you acquire enough "superior" talent to make these kind of runs their programs are making. Cohen was 9 outs away from making the CWS with a bunch of juco transfers as the major leaders of this team. Guys like Parks, Vickerson, and Shepherd really proved to be great leaders and almost got us back to Omaha, we just weren't there yet. Hopefully, we can get Dudy-Noble rocking every weekend like in the past. Final note, I hope Florida and O'Sullivan go 2 and out in Omaha and get embarrassed both games. Never been one to not root for a SEC team in Omaha, but O'Sullivan is pathetic. Maybe in the future they will come to Starkville for a SR so we can show them what 12,000 Bulldog fans per game sound like, sad they can't even get that many in a 3-game series.

I would venture to guess that they cleaned up the state as far as the best players and probably added a couple of high end out of state guys like Hudson Randall.

Bottom line- they did a great job of recruiting.

1) This season MSU baseball finally reclaimed the MSU baseball tradition that Ron Polk built, then destroyed.

Cohen talks about MSU baseball tradition in interviews, but it never gets mentioned on messageboards.

Cohen took a rag-tag bunch of outcasts & had them within 9 outs of making the CWS. A lot of that momentum was due to MSU's baseball tradition resurfacing.

2) MSU's pitching should be very good next year. All the pitchers that stepped up in post-season play will be back. If pitching is key to baseball success, then MSU will be a ranked team all of next year.

I'd love to know where we'll end up in the final polls. On the field performance puts us in the top 12 teams left at the end of the season (there were4 sweeps in the SRs), but I'd guess we'll be in the 18-22 range.
