I'm going to listen tomorrow on the radio and boy does that take me back to the days before all the games were televised and when kickoff was 1:00PM. The games moved along without TV timeouts and had such a nice flow to them. But since it's on Peacock I'm guessing there will still be more commercial breaks than there was when I loved listening to George Paterno's color commentary along with Fran Fisher's play by play.

then you got the hour long highlight show Sunday morning, and for a time, TV Quarterbacks in the evening.

Didn't get any better than those two, grew up on the Sunday highlight show as well. Would love to find some of those to watch.

I remember taking my college boards too long ago, the moderator kept taking sneak listens to the PSU game on the radio I wish he would have turned it up more so I could hear more!!
Btw weren’t the games at 130 and the pros at 1 pm ???

I think you're right, sluggo. Games were at 1:30. Planned to listen to today's game but then broke down and got the Peacock subscription. It may be heresy but I am not a big fan of Steve Jones' play-by-play. I really like Jack Ham though.

In the 80s, I was in the Navy and stationed in Scotland for 3 years. Occasionally caught a game on AFRTS AM radio but was a struggle keeping the AM radio tuned in so only useful for occasional score. I think the signal came from Germany.

since we were a communications base, we would get media teletype feeds and score updates when at work. For written recaps, had to rely on Stars & Stripes but being remote, we got the paper two days late so at times, had to wait until Wednesday

The sacrifice I made to keep you safe from the Commie hoard.

Walked to and from the stadium back to Shunk. Watched Big Al Mentz scale the outdoor pool fence and dive off the high board.

The campus cops chased, but never caught him. We often ran interference.

I remember that there were Penn State highlights and a similar Notre Dame highlights show every Sunday after the games. I'm sure that's one of the reasons why there are so many Notre Dame fans in PA of a certain age.

In 1967 I was working in Cedar Rapids,, IA. On Saturdays I would listen to radio sports shows to hear the score of Penn State games. Well, on this one Saturday I'm sitting in a small park in my brand new Mustang -- Penn State was playing Syracuse and the score came in that we had lost 29-20. Not till I read the Sunday newspaper did I found out that we had actually won by that score!

One thing that I loved about these radio shows deep in big ten country was that they would continually play school fight songs in the background.

I watch the 1985 Marland game - shoeless Mike Zordich pick six - quite a bit on the YouTube machine to remind me of those golden days.

You lucky dog! easily one of the top ten games I wished I had attended. Congrats. The 1985 Maryland game was a litmus test of Lions fans, we just had gone 6-5 the previous year including a wild loss to WVU in Morgantown. #31 Shane was just a sophomore and Dozier did break one off for a TD, BUT it was tough to see the 1985 & 1986 seasons that night. You got to see them start out on the road fo perdition. That was also Blair Thomas' first fumble! A kick off return no less.

The 48-14 Pitt Game, the first championship in the Sugar Bowl against an over-rated Georgia team, that Maryland Game, the 2016 OSU game, the 1995 Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl championship, the Texas Cotton Bowl demolition, the Baylor Cotton Bowl Demolition, the SMU comeback in 1977 against Mike Ford, the 1977 Art Schlister demolition in Columbus, the 2008 Pryor Cry Out in Columbus. With the exception of Paul Bear Bryant, nobody is anything until they beat us and usually the wind up bloodied when they are shown the door at Beaver Stadium. That's why I am enjoying 74 and 56 so much this year, those two play football with the George Patton mindset and could have fit in anytime in our history.

I am glad you went to one of the games that really mattered to the program

Joe and George would throw an R after a person’s last name starting with A, ie…”Saccer throws downfield.” My dad and I would always wait for it on the radio.

I believe Lindsay Nelson narrated the ND Sunday AM highlight package. At the time, he was also the play-by-play guy for the Mets.

My favorite all time radio team was the Fisher-Paterno duo. Listening to the broadcast was like listening to Joe doing color commentary and I loved when George would question his brother’s strategy at times.

And the Sunday hour long TV highlights show was great. Living in NE Ohio those days (80’s) I was fortunate to be able to get the radio game broadcasts and TV show from Youngstown and Western PA stations. Living in North Canton, I had to watch a grainy picture on the Sunday TV broadcast, as I was only able to get it on a second story TV that was hooked to a tall antenna with an antenna signal booster. But better than not getting it at all.
