Notre Dame and OSU are ranked 3rd and 4th respectively in the number of "Walmart fans" with no actual connection to either team.

I would have thought Ohio State or Notre Dame topped the list for sure. I only know a few, but every single Buckeye and Domer fan I know has no connection whatsoever to the school. They also tend to be fans of pro teams that are non-regional like the Cowboys, Raiders, etc. I always assumed they just picked the front runners when they were kids and stuck with it.

There is a guy that I used to work with who is the ultimate bandwagon fan. Mind you he has lived in the south Baltimore area his entire life and he is in his mid 50s. These are his teams that he swears he’s been a lifelong fan of Even though his mom and dad have always been fans of the local teams.

I was going to say, I know plenty of big PSU fans that didn't go to PSU. They still love rooting us on, going to games and spending their $ on our school, etc. I certainly don't think less of them because they didn't go there like I did.
I don’t really know any PSU fans that are not directly connected in some way to PSU - a friend I know grew up a few miles from PSU and my nephew whoSE Dad and me went to PSU - all Domer fans I know have zero direct connection to ND outside of being Irish Catholic which is a weak reason at best like the Cowboy fans in Philly.

Thank you, Erial. I resemble your comments. I used to share season tickets and drive 400 miles one way out and back on a Saturday to games. I have done my part to bring Centre County out its economic challenges shopping downtown.

Edit: @LionJim , you can do the simple math on this. 387 miles in 5 hours and 45 seconds. Start 25 miles from Indiana state line and 5 miles from I-80/90 in Ohio. Only received one ticket from interstate driving. SC police caught me once.

Funny but we might be #5.
When I first joined these boards 100 years ago I was shocked a non State alum would be on a college football board. I took a ton of schit when i asked about it.
First hand this past summer my neighbor had a 60 bd party and a couple from his old hood near Columbus rolled in, dad wearing a $100 osu football polo. I asked him when he graduated, “oh I didn’t go to OSU, I went to Toledo.” Fraudulent as fvvck. I made fun of him all night.

There are quite a few regular posters here who didn’t attend PSU. Some had parents who went to PSU but some are just along for the ride. I attended PSU (didn’t graduate, I transferred out before they kicked me out) but even if I hadn’t I’d still be on this board right now giving you ****.

Penn State has millions of non graduate fans. If they didn’t buy merchandise, it would be a problem. My daughter is an alum, she was born in ‘81, but I’ve been a fan since before Joe was coach.

I didn't attend PSU, had to go into the military, thought about the GI bill, but was fed up and
needed to be left alone and figure things out instead of being under another discipline.
My late brother who was a PSU grad took me along to games, they were unforgettable
memories, and i met some great fans from all walks of life, it was invigorating therapy. I
can't express in words how much i appreciate the Penn State community in it's entirety.

There is a Walmart in Tunkhannock, PA that I go to monthly to just walk around and browse for 30 minutes. I do it just to feel good about myself!! 30 minutes and you feel like your Brad Pitt compared to the 3-toothers that shop there!

As an addendum to this, I just saw a social media post by the same guy from Friday, where he said he was rooting for Texas and has always been a Texas fan. Guess he will be a long time buckeye or Notre Dame next week too.
