Tommy Rees emerges as a "serious" candidate

Seems Deboer is the new #1 but Rees is gaining momentum. Norvell's name is still out there, though he reiterated his commitment to FSU yesterday and even picked up a transfer from Alabama.

Rees would be an interesting choice and maybe a safe one. If Deboer comes in, with his track record and fresh of playing for the title, he'll have a fairly short leash with fans. With Rees, nobody would expect him to come in as a brand new head coach and have instant success on the scale of contending for a title immediately. Going that route would understandably necessitate a growing period.

Yeah, I'm not buying that AT ALL.
🤷‍♂️

On3 reports that he will interview. Is he the top pick? No. But he's supposedly getting interviewed. Some in Bama circles were worried about losing him this offseason. I didn't think their offense was that great for them to be worried about losing him, but I don't follow them that closely. I guess the feeling was he put together a pretty good offense for what he was given to work with.

Rees is a potential sacrificial lamb

That is my thinking if they can't get a home run level hire. I also think hiring someone like Rees would come with a longer leash than had they hired someone like Lanning. With Lanning, fans would have expected near instant results. A young with his first head coach job would understandably be given a little more leeway. He's not likely the guy they'll hire, but he's moved into consideration.

Courtesy interview...when he gets let go when DeBoer is hired he'll be able to say he "was a candidate for the Bama HC job".

Possibly. Everyone's guessing on everything right now. Someone is bound to guess right eventually.

I really don't care who they hire. I do know that whoever takes the job is a fool to follow Saban at that insane asylum of fans. Bama fans think they have a birthright to national championships and if they aren't getting them the coach needs to go right now. If the talk about Saban "being around the program" after he retires are true, a coach would be even more of a fool to take the job.

If you look at Bama's schedule next year and assume they take a step back, it's not hard to see 3 losses on their schedule. Not saying it's likely, but certainly possible. It was Saban's coaching mastery that kept them from such a season this year. Even Finebaum conceded that much and Saban broadly hinted that that's what took so much out of him this year. Bama fans haven't had a 3 loss season in 14 years. Could you imagine if they lost back-to-back games against OU and Auburn to end the year?

I've seen several rumors swirling around that Dabo was contacted either last night or this morning by Bama.
I'm certainly not owning this one, just passing along what I saw. (To say I'm dubious is an understatement)

Yeah, being widely rumored that he was contacted and declined. Of course, Clemson folk are crowing that they're in a position that their head coach turned down the Bama job. Bama folks, of course, are saying the whole report is crap and that Bama would never stoop so low as to contact Dabo.

Funny. Of course they contacted him. He's a NC winning alum. They'd be fools not to.

Now that Saban's retired, Swinney unfortunately leads the coaching pack, followed closely by Smart. It's a pretty short list of active coaches who have played for 3 titles, winning 2.
