Truck thread: Switching from Ford to GMC.. what should I expect?

I'm coming out of a long line of Ford company trucks. Currently I'm in a 2019 F-150 Lariat. Tuesday I'm being switched to a 2023 GMC 1500 Sierra SLT Duramax.

Power, throttle response, handling, shifting, comfort, infotainment......Other than swapping from gas back to diesel, what should I expect? The last time I drove a GMC was never.

I’ve always been a Chevrolet guy myself. Had 3 Silverados… but I have had one F150. I liked it and honestly didn’t notice much difference between the ford and Chevy. I’ve never had a GMC though. I’m guessing some will have some passionate opinions about one or the other but I’m guessing if you’re objective about it, there ain’t much difference

As a recent former state employee I drove them all daily, whichever brand was in our pool at the time I'd grab it. I never noticed much difference in any except for the Dodge. Dating back to when I first drove one in high school for the US Forest Service till the day I retired, I've hated those cheap made pieces of crap. Good friend is a business manager at a Chevy dealership and says he hates to see them come in on trade, all Dodge products not just trucks because owners expect way more than they're worth on trade, they depreciate way faster than others. The ones that really get hurt are those Charger and Challenger owners that finance for 7 years and come back to trade in 3 years and are so upside down they'll never get a vehicle paid off

Oil leaks, squishy ride, outdated interior, and check engine lights
But you're getting away from electrical issues, occasional tranny issues. & a stiffer ride

Agreed. Always been a Chevy guy bc my grand father and father sold them.

End of the day I just like the look better (most years).

Cheaper feeling interior and high likelihood of electrical issues.

GMC- Grown Man’s Chevy.

I have a 2008 with 213k on it, had 7500 on it when I got it in 2009. Still going pretty strong, despite hitting 2 deer over last 3 years. Besides the cosmetic stuff, just general maintenance. starting to replace coil packs though. Have replaced valve cover and oil pan gaskets at 200k.

Change oil when computer says to, which is usually about every 11k. Use penzoil high mileage with a pint of Lucas oil additive.

Have a 2012 Tundra with over 200k on it, runs like new although I bet the crap out of it. Never had an issue, probably just jinked myself :p

Made this exact switch from Ford to GMC.

Transmission issues would be my biggest concern. Please research the transmission model before buying, currently a major lawsuit ongoing with GMC transmissions. The 10 speed seems to have fewer issues than the 8 speed. Interior is slightly more outdated and cheaper. Ford uses a better leather IMHO. Overall the GMC looks better and Ford's aren't without their problems either.

My next truck will be a Tundra. They're ugly but way fewer problems.

I went from a 16 F-150 5.0 to a 20 chevy 1500 Duramax. Had nothing but issues with the ford. I myself havent had any issues with the 3.0 duramax. got about 77K miles on it and average about 27 mpg. Father in law has a 2019 chevy 1500 duramax and has had nothing but issues with his. He only has about 50K miles on his truck and is about to trade it in. I work with 3 other guys that have the 3.0 duramax and its been minimal issues for them that I'm aware of.

To me, its completely hit or miss on diesels. Some guys swear by Ford, some swear by GM.

I’ve had GM all my life, except for a 2015 or 2016 F150. It was a decent truck but the issues started showing up right before 100K miles. The Ford seems to have better technology, but I like the ride in my Sierra compared to the lighter aluminum bodied Ford.
