So boring. Can you just tell us the details. To me the guy too a 2 minute story and stretched it into 14 minutes.

Yeah, he does that. Frequently.

In 1995, when the Clemson Tigers played the South Carolina Gamecocks in their annual rivalry game, Jefferson-Pilot made the inexplicable decision to not televise the game initially, saying that no one cared about the rivalry. They were about to find out what a giant mistake they made.

Check out the 10:50 mark of the video.

When word got out, Joe Dagget - who was sports director of WIS-TV at the time - on his next sportscast urged all fans from both schools to call Jefferson Pilot, and gave out their corporate phone number on the air.

Have Gamecock and Tiger fans ever been so united in a common cause?

JaguarGator's point was that JP's screwup was in the initial reason they gave for not televising the game.

Does anybody remember all of that? At the time, I had taken a hiatus from Gamecock sports.

I was working in the Athletic Department at the time and remember very little about this.

Meh.
Very similar thing happened in 2005 when the game was only going to be on PPV, then ESPN2 picked it up at the last minute for an instate only broadcast. We lost that one too.

Going forward, I think the worst we could ever conceivably see would be something similar to early-season home baseball games on SEC+ in which they have only one camera and just carry the radio audio along with it.

At minimum these days, the game would probably be a multi-camera setup on SECN+ or ACCN+.

We played surprisingly well until late in the 3rd quarter, when the taters finally figured out they were a power running team and we were fielding what had to be the worst run defense in school history that season, and then rammed it down our throats, most of their 309 rushing yards that day coming in that time frame. We really wasted Taneyhill's senior year with that lousy defense!
