Just saw that too. I think we come out much better with him than Garrett.

the word on this board was that Garrett was all hype and this guy was really better.

Let's hope this one holds up a little better than that one did.

Edited to add: GREAT job Croom! We just came out ahead on this swap.

That is a big commitment. I have seen him play and he is the real deal. I wanted him before Garrett anyways.

Even before Garrett committed to you, I said this guy & Moore were better IMO. I stand by that. I think you traded up by losing Garrett (based on the two games I saw).

I hope Nutt can land Moore. It would be fun to have the Eli/Fant type bickering back.

I've actually seen both Garrett and Russell play, but I don't know how much of an accurate assessment I could make on both of them. I saw Garrett play USP his So. year, and of course the Tigers were pretty much in the backfield the entire night. Garrett looked like a Senior as a So. Had some drops, but I thought he had pretty good potential. I saw Russell's first start as a So. against Madison Central. He looked pretty good, moved the ball well and gave MC some fits. MC won in OT 17-14, which was kind of a disappointment at that time, but Meridian turned out to be pretty good.

Garrett decommits = 62,754 threads about how Croom blew it and should be taken out and shot or tortured for his idiocy.

Russell commits = 1 thread with 10-ish replies.

While Russell was, and may still be, a target, they've got the in-state guy they wanted. Here's hoping they're satisfied with that and leave Russell alone.

It took a week to get to 62,754 threads bitching about the Garrett de-commitment. And at the time, most us didn't really think we had a good chance at landing Russell. If Russell had committed before Garrett de-committed, I don't think there would have more than half as many threads bitching about it.

....with his vids than with Garrett's, although it still puzzles me why Russell isn 't getting any other offers.

obviously doesn't learn very well. We just got burned by our biggest basketball recruit in a few years today, and we got burned by our last "savior" quarterback recruit last week. I'll hold my excitement this time, thank you.

....who his coaches are likely going to be. It's a struggle for me really. I want us to sign the top offensive players, especially at QB and WR where we need them the most, but the other side of me tells me it's almost pointless how good they are if theirs and MSU's offensive futures are left in the hands of Woody McCorvey and the West Crap Offense.

I didn't say that. I said "almost" pointless, as in "not quite." What part of this English sentence did you not interpret or understand, or does it just benefit an agenda to edit out a word here and there?

Let me be clear for you. We need top recruits to sign with us, ALWAYS. That's a given, even if the coaches we have at MSU <17> 'em up when they get there. All I'm saying is the sad reality is that this will likely happen, that a guy like Russell and his potential will be lost in the mess that is MSU offensive football. I have years of concrete evidence backing me up on that.

Name all the blue chip QB's Croom has <17>ed up. I can name one - Omarr Conner. OC was a vastly different type of QB than Russell and Croom should've recognized it and designed an offense to his strengths. However, T.R. is better suited for a Croom system.

Name another blue-chipper Croom and Co. <17>ed up. Co-Eric Riley? Maybe, but attitude is a factor there. Tony Burks? He played well in the 2nd half of '06 but completely disappeared last season.

The Russell kid got kicked off the Meridian High Baseball team for going to Junior day at State. He was told it would happen and he went anyway. The coach kicked off 4 players I believe for going. I hear State has always been where he wanted to be. A great all around kid.

....at least for the Florida '04 game. Why we didn't stick with it is a mystery to me......

I don't understand this ******** mentality that our coaches can't coach our players. Some say why would any top players want to come to MSU, because our coaches will just +!#@ them up. I mean our OL was pretty damn good last year. I'd say that was good coaching considering we had 2-2stars and 3-3stars starting . Anthony Dixon came in highley recruited and I'd say he has been coached pretty damn good. I mean you sure as hell don't rush for over 1000 yards in the SEC as a Sophmore being coached ****** WITH NO %#%$%#! PASSING GAME. Brown and Hannibal both 2 stars both seemed to be coached pretty damn good to have played as good as they did in the SEC. Even little ole 2 star Gabe O' Neal had 74 tackles last year. You must be talking about Michael Henig the 1 star phenom that we recruited that ended up being a total bust. How our coaches couldn't coach up the walking body cast, I have no clue.

We can sit here and ***** about alot things, but I don't think this is one of them. Hell I would even go as far to say the coaches did a hell of job preparing Carroll to come in and be able to take over and run the team like he did. It's funny that when players perform good, then it's all the players doing and no coaching, but let a player play like **** and the coaches don't know what the +!#@ they are doing. Only at MSU do we blame the coaches for every failure, but give them no %#%$%#! credit when something goes right. I mean it's not like we are getting a full class full of blue chips and winning 3 games a year. Now that would be a good argument for your stupid *** "our coaches can't coach our players" argument.

Jackie would still give them their weekly paycheck as freshmen, but would quit after that. And so did their play on the field.

I still stick to my guns about us just not getting a QB worth a **** in there. We may have had two, Todd Jordan and Kevin Fant. Jackie ruined alot of players as well, with his lawless-type antics.

I think, at least for the first 3 years of the Croom regime, the prevailing wisdom is that this is EXACTLY what they had. Remember Omarr Conner, Jerious Norwood, Marvin Byrdsong, Quinton Culberson, Darren Williams, etc? The "blue chip" talent has now graduated.

Year 4 marks a change in the Croom criticism from "Has talent and can't coach it up" to "Doesn't have talent and (for the most part) coaches it up, but Damn Why can't we field an Offense to match our Defense?"

All legitimate arguments in my book.
