".......... It’s a mess that the Raiders started."

I do not think the Raiders started this. They just paid to get a player.

All we hear about are individual player contracts and that gets a reaction from the typical fan. The owners are making incredible money in pro sports. Much more than any player. They have teams worth multi billions with incredible annual cash flows.

Long suffering Jets fan here thinks that maybe, just maybe, the Jets helped drive up the cost that the Dolphins ended up paying having no intention of wanting Hill.

That Devonte Adams contract kind of screwed the league. Now every top WR sees a $30 million annual pay bar. No franchise can pay a top QB and top WR, despite those things often being explicitly linked.

It’s a mess that the Raiders started.
These mega contracts that WRs now suddenly seem to be getting I would think will be a topic of discussion at the next cba negotiations.

A top tier QB and a top tier WR is going to cost teams a gigantic chunk of their cap space, hamstringing these teams to fill out the rest of their rosters. I'm all for parity, but if the cap is creating this many constraints for teams, and with there being so many uber-talented receivers in the game today, maybe we should look at expanding or rethinking how the cap is currently setup.

The new factor in all of these huge contracts is the guaranteed money part. The players are getting huge amounts of their contracts guaranteed which really never happened before. I think Kirk Cousins contract was fully guaranteed a couple of years ago and that started that ball rolling. Now all the big names want guaranteed money and it's thrown a different dynamic into being salary cap savy.

Football has always had big up front money to the players in exchange for the ability to cut the player at any time. What we are seeing now is the next phase of comp for the best talent. Wait till they are paying multiple years for no play due to injury.

I just saw that Freddie Freeman's new contract pays him until 2040. Smh

The crap teams finally freed themselves of the ridiculously expensive rookie contracts that trapped them with costly beat players only to fall into another trap of too much fully guaranteed money for top players. Of course the browns were at the top of the previous problem and now are poster boys for the new one because they're incompetent garbage.

Why can't these cunning sports agents become hostage negotiators or something else so their skills can actually help society instead of just themselves.

the question is, what are they guaranteed for? injury? Performance? Many are not guaranteed for performance after the second year, because when you think about it, why would they cut somebody they just spent big money on after only 1 year? a pub nightmare.

Owners are going to go after a split cap in their next collective bargaining agreement.

Cap for QB's and WR's

And a cap for the rest of their roster.

;) ;)

Teams aren't forced to sign guys to guaranteed contracts.

you are correct, but with they way things work, they are essentially guaranteed contracts, but for only 2 years. Look at Hills, he is owed $52 million over 2 years and thats that. The team is betting his skills wont diminish that much in 2 seasons, so they agree to the contract. If they do diminish , they cut him before the league year 3, and they owe him nothing.

Hill’s new deal with Miami guarantees him $52.535 million at signing, a source told PFT. He’s then guaranteed $72.2 million at the start of the new league year in 2023.

Nope. Until the Chiefs can find someone else to stretch the field, Kelce is going to find himself with 2 really close friends from the defense on every play. Maybe even 3.
It'll probably take a couple of guys to replace Tyreek.

Well they got juju now so that's a start. At least at replacing the cute TD dances.
I like Juju, but he doesn’t stretch the field. We saw that when AB was no longer in the picture. He’s a big bodied, sure handed guy. Sorry to see him leave Pittsburgh.

AB to the Cheifs? They already have Josh Gordon. 😉

I'm ambivalent. He was hired to catch footballs but his best play was knocking out a dirty bully linebacker.

I feel like he regressed and became less effective as time went on. Maybe due to AB's departure or Ben's injuries/absence. He had a few bad fumbles. He did some stupid taunting that shouldn't matter but it does.

He was good natured. I just hate the last few years of Steelers football.

The only taunting I remember was when he cleaned Burfict’s clock (well deserved) and then stood over him. I may be forgetting some things? However, I do remember the Notre Dame alum Claypool getting taunting calls and having some major boneheaded decisions last year.

The Steelers need a guy to move the chains and help block for Harris. JuJu was that guy.

Well he wasn't expensive so he must have worn out his welcome.

You have good points. Good blocking downfield would be great. Maybe if their recent free agent O-line signings pan out Harris can actually get down field with regularity this year.

Dotson will be a Chief.
I could see that, or if Jameson Williams or Treylon Burks drops to them because of their injuries. I could also see them getting Calvin Austin in the 2nd rd, who is the same kind of Wr like Hill. They needed another WR before they traded Hill, now they need 2.

They took a position that maxed out at around $20 million per year to $27.5 million in one swoop.

In game theory, that’s considered grossly irrational. The NFL isn’t exactly a pure open market either. All franchises know exactly what guys are paid and for how long. It’s legal collusion in some ways.

The Raiders will ultimately flop on this move. That’s the free market aspect of things. They’ll pay the price, set the example and other teams will steer clear of the same mistake.

We saw it with running back second contracts. It’s not good money and the league adjusted.

Juju said before last season he wanted to play on the outside more and not underneath as much. The big money receivers make their money down the field, not underneath. I think Juju signed a one year deal with the Chiefs to try to put up big numbers and flip that into a big money multi year contract down the road. He chose to leave, not the other way around.

He was great and did all of what was asked of him without complaining once for the Steelers so I wish him well. AB can suck it.
