You know the Cowboys have been arguably the best team in the the NFL draft for the last 5 years right? And top 5 for the last 10.

About 10 years ago they hired a guy named Will McClay into the scouting department and he really started running the draft. And they got a whole lot better after that (including the top draft class of the NFL for the entire decade in 2016.)

And while everyone knows Jerry himself wanted Paxton Lynch or Connor Cook that year and ended up settling for Dak at #135... The Cowboys were still the team that drafted him first as every other team in the league said no thanks. I hear a lot of Cowboy fans bring that up, but whether it's dumb luck or not, it's still the single best draft pick since Brady was taken in the 6th Rd. And no other team pulled the trigger like Cowboys did.

After that the Cowboys have done very well outside of a few picks where Jerry lets the coaches have the pick instead of the scouts (Rod Marinelli wanted Taco Charlton in Rd 1 when the scouts wanted TJ Watt.) That was horrible. But all teams miss quite a bit.

But the proof is in the pudding. No team gets as many snaps from draft picks as the Cowboys... Last 5 seasons below.

ETA... Woof at the Raiders. Look how far they are behind the normally bottom feeding Jets.

If you want to rank the overall talent drafted instead of snaps, ESPN and SI both came up with draft ranking systems and have Dallas at #4 over the last 10 and 5 years respectively.

Now you want to bag on Jerry, look no further than how he manages free agents and coaching hires. That's all on him. What he paid Zeke and didn't pay Dak cost them $20 million in cap space over the last 2-3 years.... And don't get me started on the coaches.

But for the draft, Will McClay has fixed most of that (although picking his grandson's locker mate from Texas in RD 3 this year has Jerry's finger prints all over it.)


Saying that the Cowboys suck at drafting is like saying that Texas A&M sucks at recruiting.. it's wrong. Neither can win like they should because they are surrounded by a culture of mediocrity enabled by the sycophants who root for them.
