Boggs had one bad outing after he won his first three games. And in his one bad outing, LaRussa left him out there to save the bullpen.

it's that it seems like he would rather play a veteran that is hurt, washed up, or not as talented than a guy that doesn't have experience.
Boggs had one bad outing out of four. That happens. Why not let him learn at the Big League level than AAA? Especially if he is doing well.
You also risk hurting Mulder if he's not ready. He's already had 17 set backs. And the team is playing well overall, why take the risk?

You got to keep in mind that the Cards are paying Mulder a huge amount of money. I'm sure that LaRussa played an important role in getting him there. So I'm guessing he feels a little pressure to get him back in the rotation.
all he's going to do is fall on his *** after a miserable start or two and then they're going to have a doctor look at him, determine that there's no new damage, but that he just needs to be rested because "he came back too fast", and then Boggs is going to be back up anyway.

Wellemeyer's become the same type pitcher. Mulder want be able to eat up too many innings but - as you mentioned - they have so much invested in him, they have to give it a shot. Boggs will be much better off in the minors where he can learn to become an innings eater. He's a typical rookie who got some outs early on, but when the scouts had a chance to figure him out, he was toast.
