Sending this text to my PSU maniac friends and family members only. I keep reading articles about the UM situation and the trend seems toward a more balanced view. One article from SI that explained UM broke the rules, that no prior due process existed for such a situation nor was applied, and that many unsportsmanlike activities go on each and very year between coaching staffs. In other words, UM broke a rule in a universe of rule breakers so what’s the big deal?
Anyway, I caught the following excerpt about why do we care from one of those articles:
“But that doesn’t explain why this college sports scandal has become the college sports scandal, one that’s consumed the nation’s attention for weeks and is poised to forever impact the legacies of those involved. The biggest reasons this affair has ballooned into a once-in-a-generation bureaucratic spectacle are much more specific: who Michigan is, what it stands for, and how Harbaugh fits into the school’s vision for itself.”
No one can compare PSU scandal to sign-gate, but doesn’t this look and sound familiar. Endless ESPN coverage to drive ratings while our students and alumni watched in embaressment wondering when it will end, and what the future holds.
When UM, MSU, OSU have had abuse scandals never did it get the same media attention as PSU and Paterno. Fair or not, if the collective “we” didn’t idolize Joe and speak of him the way we did speaking it the program in reverent terms about doing things the “right way” maybe the scrutiny and subsequent sanctions wouldn’t have been so harsh.
Finally, the lesson learned has to be that those schools have fought back and PSU was afraid.
I am happy that our program is focused on happier times - the “disappointment” of a potential top 10 season, better facilities, more NIL, a new OC, and not survival. I am also happy that while our coach needs to improve, we should never idolize him or be afraid of replacing him. Happy Thanksgiving and for the first time in my life I am rooting for OSU.
