Why is Schoch so in to things going on in Mississippi? I was there when TA golfed one of his pitches into the right field bullpen in Omaha…. I don’t get why he’d be so attached?

I spent my Saturday afternoon training junior umpires for little league and telling them that they have to develop a thick skin, and then I see this ******** from an adult. We don't know from the clip what's been going on before, but this reaction in and of itself is not acceptable.

That's something I'd do. I umped a few little league games years ago, not fun at all, and the only reason I'd do that today is out of sense of civic duty. Umps don't get paid much and I certainly don't need the money. Thus, I'd do the "I don't need this ****" and walk away in a heartbeat and not feel the least bit apologetic or ashamed to do so. I don't even have the "I have 6 kids at home" excuse. I just have the "this ******** isn't worth my time" reason.

I enjoyed the video but I'm thinking that when you accept an Ump Job then getting jawed at comes with the job. It's as American as having a hotdog and beer while watching as you Bich at the Ump inbetween bites and drinks.

He tweets constantly about goings-on all over the place. I don’t think it’s a particular attachment to MS.

Civic duty and self sacrifice has limits. Seems like a straw/camel's back scenario. The fact that the commentary says that "it's gotta be better here than at home" says a lot.

One thing I've learned about the last couple of years: between the covid lockdowns, and subsequent mandates, labor market and pay scale upheaval, people in general are done with putting up with the general-run-of-the-millshit you'd expect them to absorb.
Mental health is more important than it used to be, and a lot of people are done with society's bullshittery.

He knows there are a lot of college baseball fans in Mississippi (MSU, Ole Miss, USM) and he's trying to carve out a niche so it makes sense to mention MS as much as possible.

My take is he’d rather be home clipping coupons and be actively raising his own family than umpiring a little league game for fifty bucks and dealing with a bunch of losers acting like it’s the phukin World Series living vicariously through little kids.

I’m not sure what happened in this situation, but too many parents are awful to umps. My son had a 8-9 game a few years ago and the umps no showed so I agreed to call balls and strikes from behind the mound to have the game. By the 2nd inning some parent was giving me crap. The lack of civility is appalling. Now get off my lawn …

2 years ago on my sons team (coach pitch), we had an unusual situation at the all-star tournament.

The game was pretty normal at first. Both teams scored several in the early innings. We had a couple players hit a first time home runs. The ump stopped play both times and wrote “first home run and date” on the ball. He made it personal for those boys, something they will always remember. Too bad, the last inning overshadowed this gesture.

Things got strange in the top of the 5th. After the second home run, we were up by about 7 runs. Our player hit one to right-center and they bobbled it. Player was looking at them struggle to get it in standing on second, instead of looking at third base coach (his dad), who was signaling and calling him to come to third. Coach (his dad) was upset that son wasn’t paying attention and yelled at him a bit much after the play. Ump gave him a warning for being too aggressive. This obviously didn’t sit well with coach. Words were exchanged, but he didn’t get ejected. The next play was a hit to center. Coach waved his son home, with a play at the plate. He was safe. Coach was walking back to box after play, and Ump ejected him for being out of coaches box.

Now there’s a firestorm! Boys mom lit into ump from behind the fence. Play resumed a couple minutes later. Tension was very high for rest of game.

The park director had observed some of the last inning drama and asked ump to leave after our game. Ump refused, saying he had another game to call. Deputies came and escorted ump to his car. Everyone cheered and clapped.

Nah. Especially in youth sports. Parents behaving worse than children is the norm now and its getting hard to find anyone who will put up with that in any sport. So, on their quest to make sure that little Johnny becomes a world beater and wins every game, they are making it nearly impossible for him to even have a game. If I were still involved, I'd push for league fees to increase enough to support an off duty cop at every ball park during game times and arrest any parent who threatens an official via direct words, physical interaction, or implied harm.

They were just giving him a hard time for not asking for 1st base help on a check swing.

There is a lack of officials problem nationwide because people think they can just yell and scream at officials like it’s nothing. There’s only so much of that crap someone can take before they say enough. Some people’s tolerance level is higher than others.
I agree but it would help if some did not effing suck so bad

you see those horrible calls in the valley game? That’s every day in middle school ball - you tell blue its a terrible k call when the catcher setting up middle dives into opposite batters box to catch a ball or a k at helmet lid - they get all pissy and threaten to leave

I feel like the key phrase in your post is "middle school ball." I don't care how bad the ref/ump is... If you're yelling at a ref/ump about any youth sport, you basically suck as a person.

I don’t really yell at anyone really - I tend to talk to people how I would want to be talked to - I will tell an umpire as a coach - I expect my players best and they are not getting paid, so expect you to try your best since you’re getting paid

I saw a dad go on the field yesterday to argue a call at a tournament

I also saw a dad have a near aneurysm telling blue how bad of a person he was

Maybe the umps are terrible because anybody that would be any good has long quit officiating because they are tired of it. So what is left are kids who don’t really know the rules that well or old guys who don’t give a crap and are just here to collect a check.

In that particular video snippet, yes. I don't have much faith in people providing the full story in that brief amount of time. That may have just been the straw, or maybe that's all that happened and he had a bad day, or a lot of pent up frustration with all the crap he's been dealt and it all came to a head.

I can dig that. And it's prolly a lot tougher at H.S. Games due to the closer proximity of the fans making the insults more personal and having them come from crazed parents. Previous things that went on prior to him bolting would be needed for me in order to make a definitive opinion.
