Anything worth discussing regarding the recently updated football roster on gopsusports.....

-Surprising that DE's Isaac and Robinson are 249lbs and 242lbs respectively. Most stout B10 dlines line up bigger players to try and stop the power running teams from running over them. They both have reputations from being terrific pass rushers, but will the better teams just run over them when they are in the game.....

- The redshirt frosh DE's Townley and McGraw are both listed in the high 260's after some time in the S&C program and both seem to be big framed long DE's. Could one of them have a breakout year in 2022....

- at 3-tech DT, Durant over 270 lbs and Beamon back up over 260 seems like good news if either or both end up as 3 down players

- Could Artis at 6'4" 310 be the big stout DT that could adequately replace Mustipher after this season...

- After over a year in the S&C program and Kobe King is at 245. He could be a big thumping Mike LB that the defense needs to stop the better running teams on the schedule

- On the OL, Tengwall is huge, and Effner is not. Hard to believe Effner at 6'5" and having played some the past couple years is only 287 lbs - was he sick recently or ?

- I'm looking forward to seeing Veilleux get into some games. He showed nice accuracy when he got a chance last season, and hopefully he is filling out with some more muscle, listed at 6'4", 200

- K. Lee at RB still at 234 lbs and reportedly quicker along with Singleton at 219 who looks to have a lower body like Saquon as well as Saquon speed should terrorize defenses if Trautwein has really developed a better OL for this coming season.

- At Safety, Jaylen Reed who looked of average college DB size last season is listed at 210. That's a pretty big Safety and he's reportedly right in the mix for a starting position.

- The true freshman Safety Winston listing at 6'2 199 might make him a candidate for Sam LB as he's reportedly a stout tackler with coverage skills........

Tarburton is 269. Vilbert is 258. Vanover in the 260s as well. I think the setup remains the same under Manny. 1 bigger DE and 1 smaller DE.

DTs are probably where we potentially see the difference in Manny vs Pry. PJ and his counterparts are probably going to be gap slashing more than they did, in addition to stunts.

Also to be seen how Jacobs and the new MLB handle the inside. King has the best size, but does he have the eyes to see and the hands to shed blocks? Luketa had prototypical size, but lacked the eyes, hence his move to DE.

Sutherland up to 211 is a positive. Reed size matching him bodes well if they are the hybrid.

Funny point: Allen at 213 is our inside banger while Singleton and Lee out weigh him. As much as we want the freshman to be a big part of the offense, one has to hope Lee takes the next step this year. I'd rather they slowly take snaps away than right out the gate at Purdue, Lee has 7 carries for 4 yards and a fumble before halftime.

Jacobs and Elsdon two outside linebackers and King in the Middle.
Maybe you've seen more from Elsdon that I have, but he doesn't look athletic enough to play outside to me. Last I read he was in a battle for the starting Mike position with King. The Sam OLB position opposite Jacobs at Will requires a lot more coverage ability and speed than what I've seen from Elsdon, but with the lack of depth it seems that some of the LB's will have to be ready to play multiple positions.

Too heavy?
I'd guess that as he continues in the S&C program the focus will be on agility and speed training, and I'm hoping he's down a few pounds before he takes over so he has the mobility he needs to excel as QB at PSU.

I was thinking the same thing about Allen. He's reportedly a bruiser that breaks tackles, but so is Singleton and Singleton is bigger plus reportedly the most explosive player on the roster.

Yep, it would be great if Lee took the reigns and started punishing defenses, breaking tackles and getting tough yards. But Singleton is likely too good to keep off the field and I believe Singleton will average 10 carries a game or more by the end of the season.

Maybe if the DL stunts more in practice the OL will finally figure out how to handle it?

surprising to see PJ working to lose weight. unless he has not been in full conditioning, which probably suggests he won't be able to play much till well into the season. Size is obviously a factor at 1-T DT usually looking to be fire hydrant style player - which PJ certainly was last year. He gained size last year to be able to play that role. Not much depth at that position in terms of body types.

We have a boat load of very capable 3T DTs - and they all look to be developing great by the looks of the latest roster. in 4-2-5 D, can we get away with playing a DL that looks like 245-300-270-260? Even if they are great players, which I think we have that going for us, can that size play D v the BIG teams that power the ball? Purdue will not test this, but Auburn will.

You are probably looking at 285 to 310 at DT unless Beamon or Durant are in the game. Beamon is largely a question mark. Missed a year. Very little tape prior. Durant is possibly this year's Kalen King. All the coaching kudos through the spring. It's not likely he's more than a 3 string DT unless he truly is the next Aaron Donald type or injuries force him into more time.

He will likely be a pass down interior rusher to start.

Yep, I don't look at Mustipher's trimming down slightly (what's 10-15 lbs when someone is over 300....) as anything at all. May have just wanted to be trimmer out of his injury, or just wanted to be quicker. Or maybe just missed a few meals. If he plays like he did to start 2021 he will anchor a nice DT rotation.

I was disappointed that the DL couldn't perform better with Mustipher out last season, given all the DT's on the roster. But they are all a year older and stronger, plus Durant looking like a contributor. Interesting that Artis is listed at 6''4", 310, but I doubt he gets on the field this season with all those ahead of him.....
