...his 3-driver has been specially altered to have less loft and act nearly like a driver, so obviously he's still very concerned with distance off the tee.

Since I don't have the stroke for Taylor Made to specially make me a club, I guess I'll keep on hitting the ole Big Bertha 9 degree.

Phil carried an 11.5 degree "3-wood." The normal 3-wood is 14 to 15 degrees. It's not that big of a difference for a tour pro to hit a 2 wood instead of a driver. The sports media is overplaying this story.

he does own a driver with less loft than the club he carried today. so he purposefully decided to go with less possible distance for more control. still ballsy and still cool. i do agree that it is likely being overplayed by the media.

and yes i know the argument back to me will be "but what about the guys who never carry a 9.5 degree but could?" i get it. but I would still respond that he normally hits something else and went with less of a club for the U.S. Open as part of his strategy...and i still like it.</p>

One of them, he used for fade drives. The other for when he wanted to draw it. He also carried 4 wedges a few weeks back. He's creative, but I think it is akin to a baseball manager over managing at times. Put the clubs in your bag that gives you the best chance to win, but let's not get silly with it. There are reasons the majority carry similar clubs.

that use more than 10.5 degree drivers on tour. It all has to to do with launch angle and impact. The average golfer doesnt have enough loft on his or her driver. the balls these days are made to spin less. That is why every golfer needs to be fitted for a driver. The average golfer also doesnt tee the ball high enough. the sweet spot on all the drivers now is just bove center.

You want your ball launching at the highest number possible ( 12 to 17) with the lowest amount of spin (2200 to 2900). Basically you want a ball coming off your driver at a high launch with the lowest spin. Like a Charlie Hough knuckle ball. Eveyone is diffrent though.

Guys like Nick Watney and Chris DiMarco and many others have 13 degree drivers because of their impact position.

Like I mentioned before, the higher the ball flight the better with balls these days. You want your ball to launch high, hit a flat period and drop. Not up shoot and drop or stay the same trajectory.
