C'mon!!! You know that they say about preseason rankings... The '85 and '05 teams came from out of nowhere and had amazing runs. This team can too!

Agree but in today's world it helps to start in the top 20 somewhere. Still, beat Purdue and auburn and we're likely in the top 20 so no worries... B1G solves the rest.

I really do think if we had a LB crew we knew was ready out the gate, we'd be ranked higher. Plenty of time to get it going.

When you 14-12 in the last 2 seasons, this is what happens. Northwestern had the same record. They are not ranked. Win games and things will change.
I have them at 11-11 the last two seasons, and any coach that looks at that record of performance, and the corresponding lack of 5-star recruits, would probably vote them to be a very generous #27.

So how many more 5 star recruits do each team ranked higher than PSU have?

Penn State not being ranked in the opening Coaches Poll is probably how it should start and probably not how it will finish.

Take that for what it's worth....

Where do you work that you can get a $.75 soda from a vending machine? That's 2005 pricing!

Well pre-season polls are not terribly valuable, I don't agree with his assertion that they are totally meaningless and the voters "dont have any idea." Something tells me Alabama will perform close to their pre-season ranking.

Well at least be in the top 15 or 20…..and not be ranked below #16 Pitt!
And exactly WHAT would be your justification for ranking them say #15 or so? Coming off such a stellar season with the same HC and QB? Given trends, #27 is a pretty realistic guess.

27th is right on the mark with the way they ended last year. PSU should be easily in the Top 15 with a 5-0 start.

I stand corrected. They were 11-11.

You must embarrass very easily. What preseason ranking would make you happy??
It's easier to crack the top 4 to make the CFP, than to get Herbie to vote PSU against 'Bama to play for the championship while PSU is at #25 (assuming they move up)

Some won't like this but ESPN has us at #16.

Final 2021 ranking: Unranked

Record: 7-6 (4-5 Big Ten)

To make College Football Playoff: 2.0%

Where Penn State is right now: Sean Clifford back after a 3,000-yard, 21 TD outing in 2021, but there are big holes to fill on a defense that ranked third-best in the Big Ten in points allowed.

James Franklin also needs to create a strategy running the ball after finishing second-worst in the conference last season and just lost Noah Cain to LSU. Watch out for season-defining road trips to Auburn early and to Michigan in October. Ohio State comes to Happy Valley this fall.

One of the big holes in defense is Brandon Smith. I don’t think it’ll take much for the filler of that hole to be an improvement.

The preseason rankings only mean something to some when Penn State is ranked high. Sort of like the academic ratings meaning nothing now, but meant everything when it was ranked much higher. Funny how that works.

I don't see an "amazing run". They could win 9 games if they beat Purdue.

2021 Final Coaches Poll (2021 Preseason Coaches Poll)
1. Georgia (5)
2. Alabama (1)
3. Michigan (33)
4. Cincinnati (10)
5. Ohio State (4)
6. Baylor (Zero preseason votes)
7. Oklahoma State (22)
8. Michigan State (Zero preseason votes)
9. Notre Dame (7)
10. Oklahoma (3)
11. Ole Miss (25)
12. Utah (26)
13. Pitt (44)
14. Wake Forest (Zero preseason votes)
15. Kentucky (37)
16. Clemson (2)
17. Houston (46)
18. Louisiana-Lafayette (23)
19. NC State (35)
20. Arkansas (52)
21. Oregon (12)
22. BYU (31)
23. Iowa (18)
24. Utah State (Zero preseason votes)
25. Texas A&M (6)

Only 6 teams that started in the Top Ten finished there. 60% is a D- for the preseason prognosticators. And the 2 Top Ten finishers that got zero preseason votes? Do these voting coaches even football?

The Second Ten predictions were even worse: 0.0. On the bright side, they keep good company:

On the downside, based on their preseason ballots some of the coaches could be expelled from their universities along with Mr. Blutarsky.

I'm pretty sure I won't be slitting my wrists over this poll. I'll wait until we go to 9 OTs with the mighty Chippewas of Central Michigan, and even then I'm more likely to rip off a hangnail than actually sever a blood vessel.

It is the PSU sour grapes duality. If we have something it is by default the best. If it isn't considered the best then whoever made that judgement was in error. And if another program is clearly better it is because they cheat, don't do things the "right way", don't do it with what we label as "class" (whatever the hell that is supposed to be).

Like when Herbie spouts off complimentary BS like "best game day experience" then he is considered to be the absolute fount of knowledge. Anything else that might not be so rosy, then he is an idiot.

This duality appears to apply to all things PSU.

Hope the team feels slighted and this motivates them.

Otherwise... meh, I care not about preseason ranking.

Everybody knows Herbie is an idiot in any case. As are you.
