Big 12 nears six-year, $2.28B TV extension deal with ESPN, Fox

See the link below. From the article:

”The Big 12 is on the cusp of extending its current television contract with ESPN and Fox, according to ESPN sources.

The league is in the final stages of putting together a six-year, $2.28 billion contract extension that includes a sizable pay bump for schools. The new contract, which takes hold starting in 2025, includes ESPN owning more than 60 percent of the inventory and Fox adding a sizable portion of college basketball.

The contract's near completion was first reported by the Sports Business Journal.

The deal projects for the Big 12 to make a sharp increase in media revenue per school, despite Oklahoma and Texas not being in the league after the 2024 season. A source said that the league is expected to agree to a grant of rights with its 12 members for the length of the deal.

The overall value of the Big 12's media deal is expected to increase from $220 million annually to $380 million. That's an average increase in media-only revenue per school from $22 million to $31.7 million (the $380 million is now divided 12 ways with the addition of BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston).

The new deal will mark an uptick in the Big 12's overall distribution number, which currently stands at $42.6 million per school. That number is subject to myriad variables such as NCAA tournament units, bowl revenue and new College Football Playoff revenue.”

Penn State to the big 12.

Not bad for a league that many thought was moribund.

I have to wonder what the ACC is thinking. The Big XII will get another contract before the current ACC deal expires. Would ESPN have any incentive to give the ACC more money before their current deal expires simply to keep them happy? But why would they when they have them on the cheap for the next decade plus?

Indeed...not too shabby for a conference that in 2025 will have TCU and Ok State as arguably its two best teams (well, maybe BYU and Cincy as well). Makes me think of an Eastern version of the Mountain West.

if UCLA is not allowed to join, what do others think B1G will do? Just add USC and stand pat for a bit or very aggressively look for a team(s) to replace UCLA?

Your take Tom if you have one ?

I don't think it changes things very much. As Canzano indicates, it's more about filling a slot with an ACC team (as the Pac is likely to reduce the annual conference games per team), and not having to pay a huge fee to the visiting institution. And also about helping out both the ACC and the Pac, which are both in a weak position due to their current TV contracts. I don't think that it will be a reason for a Pac team to stay if they have an opportunity to bolt for a more lucrative conference.

Interesting perspective , and well thought out

I should have clarified. I meant the Rose Bowl trying to dictate it’s role in the CFP and in essence holding the process up.
Yes I believe your right on that . The bowl itself has an ego and it has been stated by many the Rose lives in the past and still thinks it is the only bowl game .

Hence, Michigan's goal to always get there, birds of a feather.

Let the Rose Bowl select the top two teams that didn't qualify for the CFP each year and they can keep their traditional New Years Day timeslot. There, done.

So Tom your take on what goes down ?

UCLA joins the B1G. Their athletic finances are an absolute mess (kind of like Maryland's and Rutgers' were before they joined the B1G). I think that, and how much money they'll get from the new B1G TV contract, trumps any other concerns.

- yeah, their travel budget for athletics will increase
- yeah, their student-athletes may spend more time traveling to B1G schools than they did to PAC schoools
- yeah, Cal is kind of left at the alter, so to speak

But those issues, when looked at the big picture, are kind of minor, especially when contrasted with millions of dollars they'll be making by joining the B1G.

The UC Regents have some power, and may try to use that to leverage some promises/commitments from UCLA. But it would be fiscally irresponsible for them to keep UCLA from joining the B1G.
