Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick explains why they pushed ACC to add Cal, Stanford

The power shift in college sports isn’t ending anytime soon with realignment and expansion talks circulating nonstop. The Pac-12 Conference looks to be dissolving, and now Stanford and Cal have explored other conferences and even received interest from the ACC. Notre Dame apparently made a push to bring these two programs to the ACC, although it got hit with some roadblocks on Wednesday night.

Now, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick opened up on why they were making the effort to try to lure Stanford and Cal, per Heather Dinich of ESPN.

‘ND AD Jack Swarbrick told me the reason they advocated for Cal and Stanford was because “The notion that two of the very best academic institutions in the world who also play D1 sports could be abandoned in this latest chapter of realignment is an indictment of college athletics.”‘ 🤥

Stanford and Cal don’t offer much on the football or basketball front, at least as of late. However, the academic appeal is surely appetizing for other conferences, and getting some of the West Coast market is another bonus.

But, those talks hit some snags, and now it remains to be seen what the future holds for both the ACC and Pac-12. Notre Dame is in the ACC in essentially every sport except for football, where they remain independent, so it makes sense for the new Irish AD to make a push to bring them to the conference.

The Pac-12 Conference has four programs remaining, and it’s only a matter of time before they go elsewhere.
I know a few Homer Domers, I asked them about this. Funny how what Jack said to Heather, and what they said was on their boards is so different.

They told me it was about staying in California for recruiting purposes. They expect to lose USC now that they joined the B1G. The addition of Cal & Stanford would guarantee ND a trip to California every year since they can pick who they play for their 5 yearly ACC conference games they play.

To quote UNC AD Bubba Cunningham today, “Why should we care about what they want?” “They are strictly looking out for themselves. Remaining a viable brand for a TV deal the rest of the conference gets no part of.”

So it's about academics? LMFAO!!!!!! Both of those schools could shut down their athletic departments and wouldn't miss a beat academically.

Well in his defense, if all the quality educational institutions shut down their athletic departments the schrade is over.

ACC university vote on Stanford & Cal induction comes up 1 vote short.
Needed 12 of 15 to say yes.

NC St, UNC, FSU & Clemson all said No way!

I’m sorry but I read the article on the Mountain West and PAC 4. I don’t see the difference between the PAC 4 joining the MW or the MW dissolution so those teams can join the PAC conference. Okay the PAC name lives on but you still have the same FCS caliber schools. No way Disney offers $30M a team when they $6M a team now. Nor would they get an automatic bid to playoffs.

CONS are scheduling, predominantly for football would be very challenging with constantly going across these major time zones during the season.
Other Con: I don't think USC & UCLA have ice hockey and wrestling teams.
But they have sports like water polo, beach volleyball, etc which no other BiG schools have.

I heard one of the talking heads say that the belief is that the schools don't add value or, at least, don't add enough value to justify the logistical headaches and costs.

But why did those four acc schools object? Do the others see athletic value in Cal and Stanford? Or are the other acc schools focused on Cal and Stanford academics and brand?

They likely don’t. And the ACC - at least the Southern schools - function a lot more like the SEC than they do other conferences that feign concern about academics.

That's not 100% accurate.

Nebraska competes in women's beach volleyball

Indiana and Michigan compete in women's water polo
Indiana is in the same conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), as USC and UCLA for women's water polo

Penn State is in the same conference as the two LA schools for men's water polo, albeit Penn State Behrend and in the eastern versus western division. Doesn't look like the twain meet.

How does University Park not have water polo teams? Seems like a growth (expansion) opportunity once The Sandy Barbour Grand Cathedral of Aquatics (and such) is built.

Think they got hung up on whether the new Seement Pond would have two or three panini stands.

Heard an interesting take on Conference Realignment

Rutgers and Maryland go to ACC
F$U and UNC join Big Ten

Nebraska goes (back) to the Big 12
Notre Dame replaces Nebraska

Of course, it won't happen, but I thought it was interesting take that someone would think programs would leave the BI8.

Nebraska AD Trev Alberts says next conference realignment will be ‘far more disruptive’ (msn.com)

This entire conference re-alignment idiocy is being driven by one objective: To, in a greed and lust-driven obsession, separate the football Haves from the Have-Nots. That is it. Period. End of story.

In so doing - rather than being honest, intelligent, righteous, and less "Mutton-Headed than what has become the norm for Higher Ed and Sports Leadership Circa 21st Century" - and simply doing the one thing they wanted to do, the powers-that-be have created an entire tsunami of abjectly terrible implications, for no purpose.

At some point, as Trev alludes to, someone will likely take a look and say "What in the name of contagious mass stupidity have we done?" and will try to unwind some of the craziness. Craziness which only happened because the powers that be - from the NCAA, the Conference Commissioners, the ADs, the University Presidents, etc - were so incredibly obtuse (and fat, dumb, and happy) for years and years.
Maybe it will all be too late - or maybe they will have some success in unwinding a portion of the craziness. Who knows?

Can someone please unpack this for me? Is he talking about conference expansion like that which gave Nebraska access to Big Ten money? He's against it? Or is he saying that "well, it was OK when WE did it but not for others"? NOW it's stupid and greedy?
