I've got a PC, she's got a Mac. We are getting her a new laptop and I wanted to backup some of her files today. I feel like I'm in my first day of computer class back in high school, not knowing how to perform any basic functions.

I have a PC and my phone is an Android. My wife has an iphone and I can't figure out much of anything on it.

Had a PC for the longest, then decided that since I have an Iphone & Ipad, might as well keep it universal, so went the Mac route.
A very small learning curve, but now everything flows seamlessly. (And a lot less stress worrying about all the viruses out there, that mostly target MS machintes.

It’s a learning curve but it’s easy to get over. Much like Microsoft once you can run the computer you can pretty much run everything. iPhone is not that much different just simplified.

Some of the differences are stupid, like no delete key. That
Upper right corner on the key pad,

Buy a standard wireless usb mouse and google
Apple shortcuts.
took me about 30/45 days to adjust but they are better.
I have not had the “frozen “ machine in 8 years and that was a weekly occurrence on my previous laptops and cpu’s.

No right click is another one. I mean, there's no reason NOT to have one other than to be different from PCs. Mac users are like "It's so easy, just hold control and then click!" Or on a PC, just click.
Or on a MacBook Air (laptop) just press 2 fingers on the pad.
Come on people, this is not hard.
Some are just looking to complain.

But how is that any easier or better than the right click which already existed? It's just different for the sake of being different.

Never said it was "hard", just counter intuitive. To me. For no apparent reason. I don't complain, i just don't use Apple products. Glad you found something you like.

Right. Nobody's saying it's hard. And I rarely if ever use a Mac, so not really complaining either. If Mac was first, I'd say PC was stupid for unnecessarily doing basic things differently.

There are reasons why Windows dominates the PC world.

Curiously, Apple would probably see greater Mac sales if they got rid of some of the unnecessary and arbitrary differences. Most PC users I know who won't touch Mac won't do so b/c "it's just too different". I understand there are some necessary differences due to different operating systems, but many are just arbitrary.

But by now it's a "thing" for Macs to not have delete key or a right click on the mouse. It's part of their identity.

If you really want a right click on a IMac, simply go to Preferences, select mouse, then select Secondary Click.
Now you canRight Click on your mouse EASY.

Because on laptops you use the touchpad to initiate a right click (since they do not have a mouse). So on a windows laptop, you tap the bottom right hand corner, as I stated earlier on a MacAir you press 2 fingers.
2 different systems, use two different methods. Nothing complicated about it.

Initially there were 3 OS's, Windows, Apple, and UNIX. All had slightly different methods.

I don't care about right clicking on a Mac because I don't use a Mac. Somebody else mentioned right clicks.

But, again, WHY the change? The integrated right click already existed and there were no issues with it that Apple was seeking to fix by doing away with it. It was just something to change for the sake of changing it for the sake of being different (if I recall, Jobs thought it also made the mouse more aesthetically pleasing).

Inherent differences are one thing. Contrived differences are another.

Again, this is not a change when using a laptop, just a different method. Do it twice (on either system) and it's no longer a thought process.

I switched to MacBooks a while ago, and have loved them. My PC's lasted 3 years or less (That's at least 5 PC laptops) - and I take care of my electronics. My MacBooks (I'm on my second now) have lasted 6 years +. They're just a better product.

There is a sight learning curve when switching over, but I've found that I can go seamlessly between the two different products now.

I'm good with Android and I'm good with my Dell PC, Motorola phone, and HP laptop and printer. All devices get sluggish if they get too full, but I have plenty of storage and RAM.. Clean the disc once in awhile to get the temp files off. My stuff runs well - no freeze-ups, and none of it is new.

Macs are built well and seem to last longer, but it comes at a price. My wife's Mac is 11 years old and is just worn out and slow, so it's getting replaced. I'm currently 6+ years in on my Dell laptop and it's working like a charm (knock on wood).

Sadly for my wife, she's getting a Dell. For as little as she uses her personal laptop anymore, I can't justify Mac prices. She basically uses it to make photobooks these days. Any serious stuff is done on her work laptop.

Be glad you had a computer class in high school - we only had typewriters

Ha, well yeah, we had typing class with typewriters. Still remember some of my home row practice...a sad dad as a lad as alfalfa falls as a flask...or whatever.

They just added computer class my senior year and we are kind of like...what's the point? I learned Quatro Pro and WordPerfect.

Funny story...when I was in grad school, I was in the library one evening, and in one area, for some reason, they had a table with a typewriter set up on it. It had printed out instructions on how to use it since none of the younger folks would know. When I was about a junior in high school someone gave passed on to us a word processor...just a typewriter with a little digital screen on the front that you could see a sentence you typed out before it actually typed it. I thought that was high tech.

I still marvel at my grad school profs who had to type out their dissertations. If the advisor told you to change a paragraph on page 85 of 200, guess what? You're retyping the last 116 pages.

Ha. Oddly enough I had the same thing come up with my wife - needed a new computer, but doesn't really use it a lot. I ended up getting her a refurbished MacBook air. She didn't need much storage - and the price was right. It comes straight from Apple too - so it's like a "certified pre owned" car on a lot.

You just said that Apple computers are not personal computers. That isn't what you meant to say though was it?
I know what PC stands for, however, in present day computer discussions the initiated differentiate PCs (Windows or Linux based) and Macs.

The initiated? That's hilarious. My first computers were a Vic 20 followed quickly by a Commodore 64. I was a computer programmer in the early 80's before becoming an engineer. Of the three o/s you mentioned, Windows absolutely dominates. For reasons. 🙂
