Gotta hand it to the little worm, he dug up the actual contract buyout language through a public records request. With the UK AD admitting that ground will NOT be broken on a new stadium by July 1, and with "ground broken" being the example given for defining the phrase "substantial progress," then the buyout should not be the reason Byrne doesn't land Cohen.

Make way for Cohen, mutha[17]ers.

Edit: Spelling error.

on GP that are insinuating that the buyout will not be an issue if we want to hire Cohen before July 1.

Yeah...Hubdog2 says it's already been worked out. So I asked him does that mean Cohen has been offered the job or not, and I'm still waiting on a reply.

there's no reason for Kentucky not to go ahead and waive the buyout. If they know we're going to hire him on July 1 anyway, they'd be just as well off to waive the buyout and go ahead and start their coaching search now instead of waiting a month.

he's at least going to put on a dog and pony show effort to shmooze Cohen into staying, unsuccessfully of course. But he's got to make the effort in order to appease the tens and tens of UK baseball fans.

I really don't see how he could. To hell with Raffo. EVERY single MSU fan and former player I've talked to doesn't want Raffo as the head man. They all like him, but say that he's not the guy for the job. It's unreal that he's even a serious candidate.

Of course he's going to try to keep Cohen. I didn't see anything in those comments that gave me any concern. There was no indication that Cohen has given him any commitment that he's staying. Just that he's talked to Cohen and is working on new facilities (which we knew already) and a raise (which is pretty much SOP when someone is making a run for your coach).

Now, if the AD said we are going to do everything possible to keep Cohen, then I would be worried. The fact that they have talked and Cohen hasn't pulled his name out of the hat bodes well for us. Also, if they were really serious about their baseball program, then they would have already broken ground on their new stadium or at least made some kind of upgrades to the old one. I also don't think Raffo will cause Cohen to not accept the job, because if that was the case, then I don't think he would have ever been interested in the job. I mean it would have been easy for Cohen to say thanks but no thanks, because I want to respect Polks wishes. He hasn't so that tells me there is some serious interest besides Cohen just wanting to get a raise out of this situation, because if that was the case, then I think he would have already signed an extension worth more money. Cohen may not be the next head coach, but I like our chances despite what some have reported.

I have no idea if $600k would keep us from trying to hire Cohen or not, but it seems to me that it would be pretty easy for KY to just file some paperwork and get a portion of a slab poured to consitute "substantial progress" or "ground breaking". Any contractors or the like in here to add their $0.02??

It would be hard to argue in court that you broke ground on a project before you got your financing arranged, even if you did pour a little concrete and then let it sit there for a year. Especially when your own AD has said repeatedly that there's no way they could break ground by July 1. Not to mention that any new coaches you were interviewing wouldn't be too impressed with the fact you tried to screw the old coach over when he left.

how many of their fans would care? They talk about him building a program, but the fact of the matter is, while he had been there, this has been the most successful they have ever been, and they still haven't shown up. This is at a school that is huge, to. I'm thinking that they probably aren't going to show up, no matter what they do or who the coach is. And the fact that they have put off building a stadium has to tell you that the administration isn't all that big on the program either priority wise.

I can't blame them for wanting the 600,000 bucks, I mean that can buy you a pretty good shooting guard or sixth man there.

It would be the same if they wanted Stansbury, we can't really compete with their tradition and how much they would be willing to pay to get Stans. And as much money as UK has, they're only going to be willing to pay Cohen only so much, and then you throw in a new stadium on top of that. Their best bet might be to try to get the money from the buy out clause and put that towards getting a new coach and if they have any left, put that towards a new stadium.
