this article shows that its really not that much of a bank breaker to make the trip as compared to last year.

the difference in gas prices if you just look at going to games is not a problem. But just living - everything costs more - utilities, food, etc. Going to games are expenses for a family on a budget that might make them think twice. And the season ticket holders won't really be the problem - it's the walk up fan.

the income distribution for people that attend football games.

My guess is that most people that attend college football games will probably gripe about the fuel prices and just consider the trip as less affordable, but still worth the expenditure. Younger fans will probably carpool to games more than they did, but for the most part they will still go.

If you own the big $100,000 (i dont know how much those things cost) RV, you can probably afford the extra fuel tab and are still going to take it to the game.

With all that said, there is probably a small contingency of game attendees that will simply not go to the games because of the fuel cost. I think it is a relatively small number. But, there has to be that group in there somewhere.

Gas prices have gone up from about $1.00/gallon in 2000 to $4.00/gallon today. That's a greater than a 19.83% jump in gas prices, even accounting for inflation.

It shouldn't cause people to stop going to games. Say you're gassing up a car...$60 is a lot higher than $15. Assuming you fill up each way, that's $120 vs. $30. However, if you have enough disposable income to go to sporting events at least two hours away before the gas price spike, you should be able to find money to cover the cost of gas afterwards.

There are ways to cut it...for example, gravitationally-enhanced indivdiuals like you, me, and HD6 may need to cut to 4-6 meals a day. Also, instead of driving everywhere, like, say, to the mailbox to get the mail, perhaps walk or ride a bike. Or perhaps you could use the money you were saving up to buy a Genespage Premium account, and moving it to the gas account. Or perhaps one could abstain from their weekly prowl for a crack *****, bottle of MadDog, and a by-the-hour hotel room. Each of these could save up to $100 per week.

Finally, don't forget to donate plasma...great way to pick up extra income.

1. We didn't raise ticket prices like we should have so the fan is catching a break there.
2. I would think a large portion of our walk up base is in the golden triangle.

If you run the math in the article, in an accord, it costs about $78 more this year to go to games.

Counterpoint:

You may have people that reached their breaking point last year and can't stretch it anymore.

A guy I knew from the college years is(was) an engineer for an RV company and he test drove one and it was the kind you normally see at games and its tag was $400k or $500k.

that makes a difference. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but food items in the grocery store are getting smaller. There are less ounces of food per bag/box but they cost the same. Sneaky bastards. My plane ticket from SA to Memphis is up $200 in the last three months. That hurts too.

For 2 season ticket holders the cost of the season tickets, donation to the Bulldog Club to get season tickets (assumed at $100 per ticket), and meals averages out to about $130 per game. The cost of gas to drive round trip from Jackson to Starkville has risen from about $27.50 to about $40.00 in the past year. When you're already spending close to $160 to go to the game, another $12 isn't going to make that much difference. And of course, for the biggest part of our fan base, the gas cost isn't even a factor at all because they live in the Golden Triangle area.

it's adding a big cost to your total monthly budget, which in turn takes money away from your trip allowances. At least that's the case for me.

We also refinanced the house, but pretty much all of the savings from the refi is eaten up by the rising cost of fuel and groceries. For my wife and I, the games are a chance to see folks that we would not see any other time or place, so we will go almost regardless of price. We just end up cutting from somewhere else in the budget.
