Her husband died of a massive heart attack at home with her and the two children, leaving her to raise two children and meet the demanding hours of coaching. Then she fought breast cancer without ever telling anyone and not stopping work. She would go to radiation and then head to campus to coach. She took a lot of heat that year for being aloof, but she claims she was just exhausted. Didn't want her mother or children to worry, so she kept it a secret for years. She is also one of the few, if not only, lady's coach to take three different teams to the Women's Final Four.
Another interesting fact is that she and John Cheney built ?Chaney State? into two basketball powers at the same time. One of things they give the credit for their success was they practiced the men and women's teams together and against each other. Her lady's team would play first, and the boys would play after in double header games. The lady's crowd was usually much bigger.
All of this was on Sunday's rerun of Bryant Gumbell's real Sports. Before seeing that, I didn't even know the name of the lady's coach at Rutgers.
