They play Hawaii at 6:00 CT. If they win they play the Washington/Brown winner at 7:30 tomorrow night.

Hawaii is an interesting team. They won three national championships in volleyball in the 80s and were considered a power until the last decade or so. Think Louisiana Tech in women's basketball. They are actually the lowest rated 3 seed in the tournament with an RPI of 56. They would not have made the tournament without securing the auto-bid from the Big West. On paper, we should mop the floor with them, but I think the girls will be nervous and will have to shake that off.

The second round is the big one. Assuming Washington takes care of Brown, you are going to have to play the Pac 12 champions on their home court and apparently a large hostile crowd. Here is a photo from our practice session.

Washington is the No. 15 seed overall - they are solid but they are beatable and we match up well with them. Washington was in the Final Four last year and lost to Kentucky, who went on to beat Texas to win the national championship. An interesting twist to this bracket is that Kentucky, Texas and Washington - three Final Four teams from last year - are all in the same region and slated to play each other in the Sweet 16/Elite 8 rounds. Hopefully we can throw a wrench in that and join Kentucky in Austin next weekend.

If you can, keep those of us on the road and unable to watch posted on how the girls are doing throughout the match. Thanks

State out to a quick 5-1 lead. Hawaii looks overmatched by our pins early.

10-5. We are dominating the outside. I expect them to make some adjustments to counter that.

15-7 at the media timeout. Sure enough they tried to counter our outside and we scored four in the middle. Looking good.

20-15. Hawaii has found something that works. This one will be tighter than it looked a few minutes ago.

Won Set 1 25-17

Hawaii looked lost for a while but found their stride. They have no answer for Gabby.

I know very little about volleyball. Are you considered to have an advantage when serving, like tennis?

No. It’s rally scoring. You can score on every serve.

No, I understand that, although that is as change from the volleyball I learned in gym class.

What I meant is does the team serving have any perceived advantage?

Lost Set 2 25-14. Got to shake that one off quick. We looked awful.

Not really. Some teams have good servers that can be a weapon.

They switched to a quicker lineup and played very good defense. We have to get around their blocks. Our pins are good enough. Just have to execute.

No, the receiving team has an advantage. With a good pass to the setter, they will get the first opportunity to attack.

Hawaiis defensive adjustments about halfway through the first set have killed us. We can’t do anything.

Hawaii is delivering a beat down. We have no answer. Down 2 sets to 1. Backs to the wall.

This team has made a living winning tight long matches this year.

Need to find something in this 4th set and turn the tide.

This is equal to a 5-12 matchup in basketball. 12s aren’t bad teams but the 5s are better. Got to find a way to get this to a fifth set.

Up 10-7 in the fourth. Much better start. Just need to get to 5

MSU up 18-12 in the 4th. Hawaii timeout. They've found something. Anybody's match now.

Answering my own earlier question, UH has exactly 1 point off their own serve in this set.

Yep. As you say that Hawaii goes on a 3-0 run to go up 8-5. Have to answer quickly.
