year in sports overall at State? I can't remember another one where all our major sports had so much disappointment. Skull drug in our bowl game in football. 1 and done NIT postseason in Men's basketball even though we were coming off a good NIT performance the year prior and brought in some talent (supposedly). Baseball didn't make the tourney or postseason after winning it all. Also, Women's BKB coach resigns before season starts. The only bright spots were volleyball and softball.

I know we have had many bad years, but it never seemed to be in every major sport. Maybe my memory is failing me.

When I was a student, we suffered.

1985-1986:
football - 5-6 (0-6)
basketball - 8-22 (3-15)
baseball - 34-21 (12-15)

That was Freshman year.

Senior year was Tech and Ten but at least we won the SEC in baseball.

Softball super regional. First ever. Come back win over Auburn.

Selective sad memories instead of good memories.

We've had worse years results wise but this was perhaps the biggest gap in expectations vs results. First of all everybody started the year from a sky high position due to the baseball NC. Then football was expected to take a bit of a step forward but didn't nor did they even show up in TBFTGE or bowl game. Next basketball was supposed to finally have the pieces in place to be a solid tourney team but failed to even come close and ended the season getting bounced in round 1 of NIT. Baseball was coming off of our first NC returning 7 starters, the best closer in baseball and at least 3 arms that contributed. Finished dead last in the SEC losing the last 11 SEC games with 6 of them at home and in the last series the worst loss in program history.

Each season you will notice grew increasingly disappointing as it progressed then each sport was more disappointing than the one before it. So not only did we fail miserably to meet expectations, we fell from a high point and the whole process was this year-long rising crescendo of disappointment which contributed to the intensity of the pain.

The 2005-2006 academic year was a brutal sports year for us. Definitely worse than this year.

Yeah historically speaking it was a pretty good year for football and basketball.

Jeez….not even close. I nominate the entire early 2000’s. The 2002 and 2004 men’s basketball teams advancing to the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney before both being upset were the pinnacle of the entire period from 2001-2006. 2nd place was is losing in our own baseball regional in 2003. Literally every other sports year in baseball and football sucked….with football winning a single digit number of SEC games over that 6 year period.

The disappointment of not meeting expectations in Basketball and Baseball added in with Football losing the Egg Bowl two years in a row really made it a bad year this year.

In my four years, we would go to football games hoping to beat the point spread. No hope of actually winning.

Um Croom and Polk II took place at the same time, so no not the worst year. Also as a student from 05-09 this is triggering. We thought we'd made the BCS Title Game the way we were so pumped for the damn Liberty Bowl against a CUSA team.

The Egg Bowl and the bowl game sucked, but we outperformed the Vegas preseason odds, which had us at 6 wins. Beat A&M and Auburn. Three close losses to Ark, LSU, and Memphis. It’s the ups and downs that are frustrating but we ended up with more wins than projected. Sure as hell better than my freshman year of 2003, though the hump was rocking back then

It's amazing how often I read posts on this page and wonder if people just started being State fans in 2010 or 2011. This was definitely not close to the worse year in our sports history. Selective memory perhaps ? The last ten year stretch has been probly the best I can remember.

Last year sucked. Almost ALL of the '80's sucked. Very few bright spots in that decade. The 60's and 70's weren't exactly stellar either.

Agreed. Your statement reminds of seeing lists like "Greatest Movies of All-Time" and everything listed is post-1998.

Personally, I blame society and the narcissism created by social media for myopic extreme topics of "worst-ever" and "best-ever"

Compared to the 1980s, last year was a great season. 1982 - 1990 we had 1 winning season (6-5 no bowl game) and went 38-61 (9-48 SEC). You don't know what hopeless feels like unless you lived through the 1980s MSU football.
