Aside from the ridiculous name for Oregon vs. Oregon State, I'm convinced our Cocks would pound the Beavers - hard - if we played them in a bowl.

The Civil War was largely about the expansion of slavery to the Western States. Of course it wasn't on the same level at all, but wasn't the Mizzou-Nebraska rivalry super hateful for some reason pertaining to the war? Anyway, they don't really call the Oregon-Oregon St. game the Civil War anymore.

Would pound the Ducks to, but it would be more fun pOuNding Beavers.
I agree. If we could just play them (and beat them) we'd get this sophmorish behavior out of our system and come out of it more sophisticated while having our smokes.

Yeah, not so pc anymore, but that's what it was called - being from the South, never quite understood it.

A bird beating a bird isn't really smoke-worthy, is it?

Almost got it right. The push for western states to have slavery was to avoid a war. The north was trying to undermine the voting power of the south by illegally admitting states without the U.S. Constitutional right to slavery. There was a compromise to avoid war. Btw Civil War and War Between The States (WBTS) are both officially recognized by U.S. Congress. Southerners prefer War of Northern Aggression, as the federals blockaded and invaded the south, as well as fired the first shots in hostility between the two (Google Lt. Adam Jacoby Slemmer, later Brigadier General, U.S. Troops)(Fort Sumter was third shots fired in hostility).

Oregon and Oregon State would indeed be a Civil War as they are fighting for an instate trophy.

The five southern states declared secession statements mentioning slavery. Four states specifically voted NOT to secede over slavery. Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Those four later seceded after the federal government denied them their constitutional right to secede, after the first seven states seceded. After the war, all seceded states "rejoined the union", some as late as 1870.

Sorry for history lesson, but some throw "slavery" out there without context and then it's off to the races for about twenty pages of arguments.

I was previously indoctrinated by the likes of Maurice Bessinger and know all about the war. I was suspended from school for arguing about the war etc. and definitely lost social capital over it in life.

The war never should have happened. The weakness of Buchanan, the arrogance of both sides, and yes, the refusal to address slavery (politically, NOT morally) caused it. It was caused by the richest 0.1% or fewer, like every war. It was extremely stupid but so is minimizing the causative role of slavery. I am not sure that you are doing that, but I've heard it thousands of times.

Slavery is the single greatest evil and single largest folly ever to darken the promise and stunt the potential of the United States of America. I will say no more about it here.

Amen. Many have made the same mistake.

We should have phased it out with Jubilees and started paying/freeing the slaves. We were so close to the (edit: Second) Industrial Revolution!
