After suffering a major knee injury…he was never the same.
When did he injure the knee? I remember his broken arm against Michigan, but I cant recall a knee injury.

I’m not contradicting you, just wondering. I usually remember all our transfers to ACL-U.

but going from a 4.3 to a 4.7 is shocking.

lots to unpack here ...

- he suffered the broken arm against Michigan. I'm pretty sure that was the only bone or ligament that he broke while at PSU, though he did have some nagging injuries to his legs
- he ran a 4.47 40 at the NFL combine
- it was reported that he had the flu at the time of the combine, so that probably influenced his time
- I don't recall his time in the 40 during HS, but it was pretty fast. That's shouldn't be a huge surprise. I was a helper at the April, 2003 (I think that's the date) Nike Camp held at Penn State. It was held on a Sunday. Ted Ginn, Jr. (went on to play WR at Ohio State, and then play many years in the NFL) and the Glenville HS 4x100 relay team stopped by the camp, on their way back from racing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia the previous day. Ted Ginn, Jr. and Derrick Williams were by far the two best speedsters at the Camp. IMHO, Ginn was the better of the two (it was pretty close) on straight fly patterns, but Williams was the better of the two (by a good deal) on any patterns that involved a cut, stop, fake, etc. That was my personal evaluation, and after the camp was over I spoke with the evaluators and they pretty much confirmed that.
- on a larger scale, 40 times in HS always should be taken with a grain of salt. Some are hand timed. Some are electronically timed. And there are several different styles of electronic timing.

Will he be playing in bowl games or only meaningful games that he determines to be worth his time and talent?

You might be thinking of the time Felli made a “made-you-look-just-kidding” post about DWill blowing out his knee.

4.47 was pro day. His official combine was 4.65. He ran one of the sprints at 4.7, I watched it on TV. Deon Butler ran a 4.31.
