He might be all that and more... what caught my eye was that a 3 star QB wouyld be among the top 11 in the country. Always thought of the elite 11 as high 4 and 5 star types. Not complaining, just curious. If he plays like a 4+ star guy at psu, that's all i can ask.
you're picking at certain facts without looking at the big picture.
Smolik broke his collarbone in the 1st game of his junior season. He didn't return until the final 3 games of their season. As such, there was very little game video of him, which is a big part of what the services use to rank prospects.
He was a last-minute addition to the Elite 11 camp when one of the other QBs had to pull out the day before it started. He did very well there, which put him on the radar of PSU and several other universities. He had verballed to Tulane before the Elite11 camp, and was committed to them until a few days ago.
On3's Director of Scouting saw Smolik's performance at the Elite 11 camp. It is expected that between his Elite 11 performance, and some game video from his senior season, that he'll move up a good bit in the rankings.
Plus, the On3 rating for him even before the Elite 11 camp and the anticipated bump in his ranking was the #31 QB in the 2023 class. The On3 Consensus Ranking, which takes the On3 ranking as well as the other services, has him as the #39 QB in the 2023 class.
Lastly, rankings evolve. At this point, On3 only had 3 QBs with 5 star rankings, and 11 with 4 star rankings. The Elite 11 camp is not comprised of just 5- and 4-star QBs, as there are not enough of such at the time of the camp. The Elite 11 camp consists of 20 QBs that qualify based upon their performance at the 9 Elite 11 Regional camps.
