is that we weren't already mathmatically eliminated going into the weekend. Also, missing the SECT 3 times in 5 years doesn't really tell the full story. We barely snuck in with a 13-16 record in 1 of the 2 years we did make the tournament during that time span. And in the other, our best year in the last 5, we were 15-13 with a schedule that didn't include the league champs and had 2 fewer road games than home games.

like inexperience, he's not that great as an assistant, and he can't recruit. Did I also mention that he is slilghtly only a little more emotional that your average pine tree?

with a guy who could possibly miss Hoover for the 4th time in 5 years? Yeah I know it's UK. I still believe that while Cohen would be a decent hire, MSU baseball could do alot better.

He is about to go to Hoover 2 out of the last 4 years. They are about to win game 2 vs Tenn for a 3 game lead with 4 to play. They have a shot to be a 3 or 4 seed as well. He has had the SEC doormat ranked almost all season. They have an SEC title.

To give you a reference- Winning in baseball at Kentucky is like trying to win in football at Mississippi. It takes a special coach to do it, and even Tubby, Duece, and Eli couldnt get you guys to Atlanta.

If I was a MSU fan I would be pleased with the Cohen hire. I am just saying I think MSU baseball can go after some of the big boys who are more proven and have a better body of work than Cohen. I would target 3 or 4 of the big boys and if they aren't interested, happily offer the job to Cohen. I just don't think he has done enough to be the clear cut choice of a well established top 15 baseball job in America like MSU. Think of a program with a similar history of MSU. Would John Cohen be their top choice? I think he would be on a lot of short lists but not necessarily at the top of them.

I really love the fact he played here though. That tips the scale for me toward him. He also doesnt play "Polk ball".

I am impressed by his winning at Kentucky. As a former baseball player, there is no way in hell i'd want to go there to play baseball. Getting players there shows you can really recruit. So having our history and facility to help sell with what he possesses, really makes me think he could do great things here.

I don't know that we could do much better than Cohen in all honesty. He is one of the top young coaches in the country, and while I do think that we could get someone equally as good, which I would be fine with if it's not Cohen and not someone like Raffo. As far as the big boys, Augie Garrido is probably the best in the country in my opinion and he is ancient. Same thing could be said about Mike Martin at FSU and Gene Stephenson at Wichita State. Even if they are younger than Polk, I don't think that they would come because they are pretty well set where they are. I would like George Horton, but I doubt he would leave Oregon after he has made a commitment to them to build their program. I don't think Pat Murphy would leave Arizona State. Tim Corbin would be worth talking to.

As far as Cohen, he really would probably be one of the favorites even without his MSU ties, which I think are a plus in this case. I have seen some of his coaching techniques on TV and that really is what sold me on him. The fact that he coaches in the SEC, has had success at UK relatively quickly and was successful at two other stops which were also revuikding situations makes him very attractive to me.

I want us to hire the absolute best we can (Pat Casey), regardless of whether he has MSU ties.

Cohen would be a decent hire, but we could do much better. If everyone better says no, then sure, talk to Cohen. But his MSU ties shouldn't elevate him any higher than he would be without them.

I think that knowing where our baseball program was and our tradition isn't a bad thing. I do think that being entrenched in Polk's apathetic attitude is.

I would love to get Casey, but I would be very pleasantly surprised if he left Oregon State. He has lived in Oregon his whole life, he will be treated like a legend there from now on, and his son plays there right now.

Maybe you ought to be more concerned with your own team than you are with Kentucky's.

I'm not concerned with Kentucky. If y'all want to hire John Cohen without so much as calling any of the other more qualified candidates out there, by all means go right ahead. And my post had absolutely nothing to do with Ole Miss so I don't see the point in responding to that.

hiring Cohen without talking to anyone else? I think Cohen would be a great hire but his number is not the only one that should be dialed.

And I think when people are spouting stats about Cohen, the first two years shouldn't even be considered. I get tired of hearing, "he's only been to the tourney 1 out of his first 4 years." Its obvious he's a far better coach than what 7 conf. wins represents.

You can't have a discussion on here and even suggest that MSU should look in another direction. Hell I was trying to have a normal discussion and somehow Ole Miss gets brought up? There are parameters now apparently too? The 7 conf. win seasons don't count but the 20 conf win season does count? Does the 13 win season last year count? John Cohen has proven to me that he can dominate a weak non conference schedule on a year in year out basis, that is about it. In 5 SEC seasons he has had 1 season that would be considered "good" by MSU standards and they choked in the postseason. You have to consider what he inherited but at the same time you have to consider what he has done. You are all ASSUMING that a sub .500 SEC record at UK translates into going to the CWS every couple of years at MSU. If you want to hire a coach based on assumptions and potential and not results then John Cohen is your guy. He could set the world on fire at MSU but his results thus far don't make him a "can't miss" candidate in my eyes. Apparently I have a higher opinion of MSU's baseball program than most of you do.

Cohen might turn out to be a great coach for us. He'd almost certainly do better than Polk II. But forget about his MSU ties. Every coach knows that MSU has tradition, we don't have to have someone who played here in order to have a coach who understands that. Our entire sights should be on Pat Casey until he tells us "absolutely not, no way, I don't care how much money you offer." At that point, we should look at Brian O'Connor, Tim Corbin, Paul Manieri, John Cohen, Steve Smith, etc., all equally and make a choice from that list.

his first couple of seasons are really irrelevant then you don't follow sports that closely.

And yes, making Ky into a team that now plays for regionals and is in the middle of the pack in the conference is an amazing accomplishment. He is not going to win the title every year. He is on the verge of taking them to their SIXTH regional in school history....and 2 of them would be led by him.

"In 5 SEC seasons he has had 1 season that would be considered "good" by MSU standards and they choked in the postseason"

And that goes back to the original point, He is at Kentucky. If Sly Croom wins 7 games next year, he would still have never had a season considered acceptable by many schools standards, but many would think the guy is doing a good job coaching.

Sure, there are about 10 coaches i want and some are higher than Cohen, but to not acknowledge what he has done at KY and to not accept that that shows the guy can flat out coach is baffling.

without first doing a real search. But his record at Kentucky is outstanding. You were technically right that he might miss the SECT this year, but you can say that about every team in the conference other than Georgia and Vandy. Which speaking of Vandy, Corbin is another coach who's doing an amazing job at a tough place to win. I'd like to see us at least guage his interest in the job. I know he turned LSU down a couple of years ago, but people have been known to change their minds. Roy Williams turned North Carolina down a few years before he finally took the job there.

Idiocy time and time again, but wanting Cohen over Pat Casey because Casey is a "west coast guy" is quite another notch in your moron belt.

He wont come here, so there is no need in bringing it up. And I dont want a West Coast guy- see Harrison from Mississippi as my example

He didn't really do that bad, nor that great, considering where their program was when he took over.

It just seemed like Harrison and their alumni never quite got along for some reason. It really is like Ole Miss baseball has this big gap between Jake Gibbs and Mike Bianco.

he started his son (who batted less than .200) over Chris Lotterhos, the son of a prominnt UM alum who transferred to MSU and had a very good career.

of Polk declaring baseball celabacy- no need to fear nepotism.

Although, does anyone remember when we went to the CWS in 97 and Scott Polk told Harold Reynolds that he was Ron Polk's son- and Harold said something about it during the game- I can't remember exactly what it was- but I thought it was pretty funny, because anyone that was within shouting distance of the program could figure out what happened.

First of all, you don't know that he won't come here. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't, but he's never commented publicly and I know you haven't talked to him personally, so you can't say definitively that he wouldn't.

Secondly, you don't want anyone from the West Coast because one time some other school hired a guy from the West Coast and it didn't work out too well. Well I guess that means everyone from the West Coast is worthless, even if they've won the past 2 national championships.

I heard the announcer say that Scott Polk was Ron's son and almost fell out of my chair. At first I thought he had just made an assumption until I saw the story in the paper the next day that Scott Polk had played a great practical joke on him.
