What does expansion mean for the G5?

Remember a couple years or so ago when the battle cry was to expand the playoffs because G5 deserved a seat at the table?

It was presented as a moral choice between right and wrong. It was presented by some as the primary reason to expand. To continue to exclude and disenfranchise them was seen as unjust. A number of P5 coaches and ADs advocated for the change on behalf of the G5. Sports commentators and journalists joined in the fight.

The G5 deserve a voice!!!

I wonder how that perspective fits into the expansion picture.

A very interesting question.

Call me crazy, but it could become much more popular. If you don’t like all this NIL/alignment nonsense, G5 might be the place to go. Maybe even FCS.

Been wondering the same with a step further. How does it impact FCS? Say G5 becomes a portal feeder league. Might that hurt FCS? IDK

That would be amazing but this damn portal doesn’t bode well for quality football at lower levels.

Of course nobody in the P5 ever cared about the G5 programs having a seat at the table. Playoff expansion was only ever always about money. Appeals on behalf of the G5 just provided convenient cover for their greed. Nobody thinks any G5 school every has/had a shot at winning or even deserved such a shot.

That has been made clear by the expansion moves. In a matter of a few years, the public narrative has moved from giving the G5 a shot to rendering the G5 utterly irrelevant.

This is true. As the portal gets more developed and schools get more refined in their approaches leveraging NIL along with the portal you can envision the formerly P5 programs pilfering the G5 and lower programs for their top talent.

It’s a great question - and probably one that has gotten zero thoughts from the P5 level schools.

I mean, I could see nothing much changing. The P5 has always run without much thought for the G5. They’ve always gotten the best talent from the G5 to transfer, but they also get a ton of P5 transfers (most of whom end up as difference makers at that level).

Maybe the G5 becomes its own division that is run by the NCAA and has their own championship like the FCS? The NCAA already doesn’t crown an FBS champion - so let the top of the FBS do what they want. It could make the G5 more interesting.

Chip Kelly actually advocated for that kind of thing yesterday. He said the 65 P5 teams should break away from conferences in football (with other sports retaining conference affiliation) and crown a champion. Then do the same with the G5. This approach would alleviate the travel nightmares that take place with the non-football sports having to travel cross-country.

I just find it ironic how the P5 used the G5 to try getting what they wanted with playoff expansion, then they turn and make moves to render the G5 basically irrelevant.
