Specifically looking for a larger ones for checked bags I've had a hard-sided Samsonite for a couple years, piece of garbage cracked in the top from a very minimal amount of pressure.

I like the idea of hard-sided but I'm open to soft. I'm in pretty good shape as far as carry-on options; if I'm traveling for more than a long weekend, I prefer to check bags.

I'd really love to get something that would last a while, knowing that's gonna cost money. What are the options here?

I refuse to check anything. I can't find the exact one on Amazon now I bought but its similar to this one linked below. Between this one and a small carry on "personal" bag for my electronics I can get everything I need. The big one has wheels plus backpack straps that can be zipped away into a pocket too. Roll everything big (jeans, jacksts, etc) up as tight as you can and put smaller stuff in little stuff bags and go...............

I don't travel for work anymore, but I learned to find a leather or a really tough cloth bag. Those bags get abused and anything hard can crack.

Checked luggage… I rarely use one but.. absolutely the biggest POS I can find. It’s going to get beat to death no matter the brand cause United doesn’t just break guitars. They all break everything.

Only for carry on pieces will I splurge and even then only to a certain point. Travelpro or Briggs & Riley. The people at Tumi have lost their mind..

Away is the best. I use them for both checked and carryon luggage. I have only had a couple of issues and their lifetime warranty covered it and they sent me brand new bags.

Solid, solid company.

I use to travel weekly for 25 years. I’ve used two brands of carry on luggage: Tumi and TravelPro.

You can’t go wrong with either one. They’re light, durable and are or excellent quality.

If I had to pick one, it would be Tumi.

I hate seeing a passenger walking up to take the seat next to me with several of those. Its a sure sign they are going to sit and dig through those the entirety of the flight looking for a cookie, or their water bottle, their library book, etc etc etc.
How often does that happen for you? The hell airline are you flying???

You will see more hard sided luggage destroyed on a baggage claim than anything. I absolutely loathe spinner bags as you will see broken parts (mainly wheels) from those bags strewn across airport terminals.

I've had an eagle creek gear locker that has been beat to heck and back and has held up well. Eagle creek has a lifetime guarantee but the cost to ship it in for repairs can be expensive. I sent mine in for repair and it cost me 60 bucks and I got a few more years of service out of it.

Last year I won a set of Orvis rolling bags in a raffle and they have been great but they will tip forward if not properly loaded. I've talked to some fishing guides that swear by the Yeti luggage.

If you are looking for good luggage look in to bags that are made for adventure travel.

I don't think they make "it will last you a lifetime" luggage anymore. I'll go to Kohl's every 3-4 years and get a new Samsonite. I refuse to spend over $100 for something the Delta will trash after 3-4 years of use. That being said, the best suitcase I ever had was an American Tourister. I bought one similar to it about 5 years ago and it tore up after 2 trips.

I've got away and travel pro. I like the soft side travel pro a lot better than the hard sided away. Easier to pack and holds more. User choice on whether to get 4 wheels or 2

Considering the best luggage for 2024 and tested by "Experts" was Samsonite. I have no advice to give.

Wirecutter recommends the Travelpro Platinum Elite in carryon and checked sizes.
They’re like $420 and $450, which seems like a ton to me but I almost never travel.

I use whatever I found on clearance at TJ Maxx one time. Hasn’t failed me yet.

Previously I’d cruise thrift stores for decent bags but I just recently bought a good heavy canvas and leather duffel with backpack straps. I think that it’s going to be the perfect carryon or checked bag. OT but I found a complete set of Taylormade wedges at Goodwill two weeks ago for $4.99 each. They don’t even need grips.

REI brand 34" rolling duffle bag. We've used it as a shared checked bag for the whole family on a Caribbean trip, and last February it easily handled all my snow clothes and coats for a trip I took to Yellowstone. $300, but since it's REI's store brand, it's often deeply discounted.

For a carry on, I use a softshell Osprey. I kind of wish it had swivel rollers instead of straight ones, but otherwise it's great. Lifetime warranty, too, which is nice.

Sounds like the majority of SixPacSspeak think such things are disposable. Find you a bargain, use it until it's time for another bargain.

That would be my plan for luggage but you do you and overthink it if you want.
