The guy driving was drinking, though that hasn't been confirmed. Rumor was that he fled the scene after wrecking into the utility pole. Only later did he notify the police and tell them his car was stolen. Again, that is unsubstantiated, but I'll find out the charge when I view the jail's logbook Monday.

The girl was riding in the back and had no seat belt, and was severely injured. She died at 3:10 a.m. at the Oktibbeha County Hospital due to "multiple-system trauma," according to coroner Michael Hunt.

Her body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

She was a Starkville resident. Chelsey Collins, 20.

There's a possibility that the suspect, Joshua Buckner, also has a prior record on drug charges, but again, that part is unsubstantiated. Also, none of them were students.

that if drinking was involved, there will be a huge response from the community and local authorities. Similar events in Oxford have virtually shut that place down as far as drinking. I lived there for ten years, and I can promise the change is dramatic. It's not what it used to be. Don't get me wrong, underage drinking is still a HUGE problem there, but compared to as little as five years ago the numbers have fallen drastically. They did this by making most every bar in town 21 and up. Unless you're in a fraternity or sorority, it's virtually impossible to get in these places. Fake ID's don't work like they used to. And roadblocks are rampant to say the least. They also have a system in place where if students have two alcoholic citations of an kind in Lafayette county within a year, they are suspended from school.

I understand this recent, unfortunate incident did not involve State students, but the fact that this can happen on campus is absurd. I think thousand of roadblocks and ABC fines are looming on the Starkville horizon.

this is a little bit different than some drunk kid dragging a cop 50-100 yards to his grave after being stopped for DUI. I'm sure things may tighten a little, but this unfortunate incident is a far cry from what happened in Oxford.

its just a sad situation all around. kid that was driving is a career f*** up. has a bad drug problem. just got out of jail a short while ago but not quite sure what the charge was. i think either drug charges or identity theft. Not sure though. What i was told is that he fled the scene originally and either came back or they found him later on. Haven't heard anything about the other two passengers though. I went to high school with the girl that was killed but never knew her very well. a kid from her graduating class got killed about this time last year in a car wreck as well.

Thoughts and prayers go out to her family

Assuming this is the same Joshua Buckner, he got 5 years last year for Identity theft. Had to complete A&D treatment------and just got released from the RID program last Friday.

The other occupants of the vehicle were David Willington and Joanna Morgan.

The killing of the cop was just the icing on the cake in Oxford. One other student was killed while crossing Highway 6 and another was killed in a head on collission by a young man leaving a local bar. This happened years before the cop incident, as the city refused to recognize it had a problem. I frankly don't see any difference in death, and the fact is, this happened on CAMPUS. So MSU students were in danger. As a parent, I would scratch my head on this one. A death is a death, regardless whether or not they happen to be a cop. There lives are worth no more than anyone else.

Bottom line, the city of Starkville and campus police can either nip this in the bud or continue to see this type of senseless death in the community.
