Ok, so it’s a bit of a stretch to say he almost came here as the article suggests. Basically he’d heard of us, which is pretty flattering in and of itself.

Yeah, I read Dean Smith's biography a few years back and the Gamecocks were the team the Tar Heels felt were their main competition for MJ.Bill Foster had just been named head coach at SC and Foster had a strong relationship with MJ from his Duke days.Remember Duke played for the championship during the Gminski/Gene Banks days ,so Bill Foster was a hot coach...One could only dream what that might have meant.
I also think SC was in the mix for Lou Alcindor as well due to the draw of Frank McGuire and his NYC ties.
