That kid from osu almost had lee but incredible athletic acrobatic move by lee to trap him. Lee is up there perhaps 3rd. Don’t know if Carter is that close.

hind sight, but, Lee would be a 5 time team champ and 4 time individual champ had he made the correct choice on which college to attend.......

I think Lee has 5 career losses. Brooks and Starocci can both end their careers with less losses, but Lee has been much more dominant, but weaker competition after his freshman year.

Totally depends on how you are looking at this all, but Ed Ruth should probably enter the conversation at some point. 136-3 career record. 3 National Championships (and a 3rd place) and 4 B1G titles in 4 years of competition. To the best of my recollection, he never lost to a B1G opponent. Not too shabby.

Yep…it’s too bad Spencer never had the chance to maximize his potential while in college. Maybe he can join the NLWC to train after Gilman retires with his Olympic Gold and a couple more World Championships.

Somebody better equipped than me can clear up any errors, but I believe chronologically the first four-timer (NCAA champ) was OkSt's Pat Smith. The next four-timer was Iowa State's Cael Sanderson, undefeated career @ 159-0. Next up was Cornell's Kyle Dake and he accomplished this by competing at four different weights. The final four-timer if I am not mistaken, would be tOSU's Logan Steiber. (I loved watching this guy.)

IF Lee were to run the table this year he'd become the fifth four-timer. As of this date he's got an overall record of 92-5 per Wrestlestat. It appears that he lost two matches his freshman year and three in his sophomore year. He got pinned by Nick Piccaninni of OkSt @ Gallagher-Iba and I only say that because we hear of being 'Carvered', (Spencer may have gotten Gallagher-Iba'd), but it was bit of a quick call, but the pin Was called nonetheless. I didn't follow Spencer in HS and I have admired Iowa wrestlers over the years, but (for me) it's getting harder to root for any of those guys as I get corrupted by the postings of the knott-heads on HR, or whatever their primary wrestling site is now. I say this because wrestling is sport and some have almost made the guy into a Demigod.

PSU has two guys currently able to break into this legacy and I'd love to see either or both accomplish this.

Let’s not get carried away here. Spencer Lee would have been dominant had he went to most any top level program in the country. He was that good coming out of HS and he is clearly very self motivated. Of course, we would have loved to see him dominate in Blue and White, but the Iowa coaches were more than capable of preparing him for college competition. The thing that I think may have given Cael & Co an edge in preparing him for the future is the NLWC. The NLWC, right now, is the premier training spot in the U.S. for international competition. Time will tell, maybe he surprises everyone and moves to the NLWC like Snyder and Dake did? It is the place to be right now to get the best training.

funny, I hit 'send' a moment before I saw a text from my brother who sent me some info re. Kyle Dake who beat one of the most exciting and accomplished wrestlers of our time, David Taylor. Dake won his last 79 matches, a career record of 137-4 (do the math, that's 35.25 matches a year. Cael averaged 39.75/ year, wow!). Look at some of the matches wrestled this year of the guys entering postseason now...

It is a shame Lee was hurt last year. Beating Suriano at his prime would have help mute the debate over caliber of competition.

It seems to number of matches a year is dropping significantly. Brooks and some other top 10 guys, won't even qualify for an RPI ranking (15 matches).

Dake also beat Frank in the finals......ie two PSU guys who eventually represented USA in the Olympics. High cotton. Cael, Dake, Smith, Stieber right now. I would put Spencer 5th.

Look at the match again with Piccaninni, Spencer was flatter than flat caught in a deep inside cradle...

Yianni 106-2. I guess he has to be entered into all-time list. I think only Cael has better win percent.

He might be the 6th, depending on the finals order. Yianni also going for his 4th this year.
Good call. If Cael gets a voice (I know it doesn’t work that way), they’d start at 125. If Zeke from ASU or John Smith Okst have a voice it’ll start somewhere in the middle. I love it when they start at 125, it feels like all is right with the world…😉

Don’t wish to argue but just watched it again and I actually think Lee did get jobbed. The video I saw it on (YouTube replay) you can see daylight between the blades and the mat Very quick call/ count and the ref was out of position to see it all. I’m not a big defender of Iowa wrestling but I don’t think he was pinned. 🤷
