Headed to Jakson tonight and need a good place to eat. What is good in the $15 to $25 a plate price range?

for something local in that price range. I am sure there are others I'm not thinking of.

If you want to go a little higher, I recommend Ely's.

then you have chains like PF Changs, Outback, etc.

Also - any local italian would be a good bet like Fratesi's or Cerami's. Bravo and Amerigo are Italian-esque.

It seemslike the quality ofthe cuts ofmeat is not what it used to be. Last time I was there, the I ordered a strip that had a considerable amount of gristle in it. I've never been impressed with anything else on the menu either.

Bone-in filet at Ely's is best steak iv had in Jackson. Shapley's also has a good steak. Bravo, Amerigo, and Biaggi's have good Italian choices. Nick's and Walker's for fish. Most of these will cost you closer to $30-$35 a meal.

The only serve beer, you can bring in Wine or Liquor and they have the little coke glasses...

The best place in town is Parlor Market, it is pricey, but really good.

Or try Walker's, Ely's, Babalu, or Shapley's and you won't be disappointed...

If you are in the Ridgleand area, check out the Trace Grill. They just built a huge new place next door to the old log cabin they have had for years. The best baby back ribs in JXN hands down, they serve them dry with sauce on the side. If in JXN, for Italian I would say Amerigo's (always consistent and great service) or Walkers in Fondern (a little higher than 15-25 but totally worth it). Have a nice dinner!

at Monte's in The Quarter. Best in Jackson that I've had. It was better than Char, Tico's, Shapley's to me. Everyone's taste is different and I was surprised. The couple we were with, both of them tried a bite and said the same thing - it was a damn good steak.

The wife and I got out of there for under $50 - I'd recommend if you want something different.

Supposed to go to some steakhouse in Byram with some friends coming up - anyone know anything about it?

Fratesi's- good prices, good food, and best bread you'll have. I'm surprised when I mention it many haven't been there. It's small, though. Parking sucks. Other than that- my favorite.

Ely's and Shapley's- always gonna recommend because I grew up with some of the family and they are near and dear- love they named the second one after Ely. But, bias aside, great food.

I don't come from a huge town, but I always feel like Jackson only has a few really good restaurants- rest chains. That sucks.

I think Jackson has great choices for nicer/fine dining

You have Char, Bravo, Julep, Mint, Walkers, Local 463, Ro Chez, Rossini, Ely's, Shapley's, Tico's, Olga's, Parlor Market. I am sure there are others.

I have only been to a handful of these places but I have heard from others great reviews. Of course, some might hate them.

I'm fairly new to Jackson. And, I'm on a budget, so Parlor Market, Tico's, Mint are out of the question right now. Ely's and Shapley's are because I have grown up with some of the family, and if I eat with them, it sometimes helps out.

To be fair: never heard of Olga's, Local 463, or Walker's.

Heard so/so on Mint and Julep. Again, money-wise Mint is probably not for me.

Mexican sucks here. $10 for a freaking quesadilla? And, you can't make the non-plate size and just jack the price up from the kid's size for adults (hey, I'd rather do that than have to spend $10 on something [yes, for a quesadilla, that's expensive to me] I won't finish and put it in the fridge, where it's terrible the next day.) No thanks.

Heard raves on Biaggi's- it was so/so. I could make better for cheaper. At least it wasn't terribly expensive, and service has mostly been great.

Decent cheap(er) spots? Anything like a Restaurant Tyler?

I dunno, just never seemed like a ton of great choices. To be fair, the choices have gotten a lot slimmer where I'm from (Greenville) than they used to be (and a few have some of the restaurants we've named here). Lots of people have left town. If you've ever been to Doe's- steaks are good, and I love the family. But little known fact: Blues Bar on Walnut St. has some of the best steak I've ever had in my life, even comparing it to Doe's. For a $20-25 steak, it can't be beat.

I've heard it's hit or miss, though. I've been living in Jxn since graduation out on Old Fannin. Cerami's is decent, but I haven't really found any real good places out this way... so, in-thread hijack... any good restaurants that won't break the bank out this way? Sucks having to drive into town or across the spillway for good food.

Yes: Fratesi's is awesome for the bread, salad, apps, entrees, dive atmosphere and all.

No: We have a freaking ton of fine dining locations. Ely's and Shapley's are great, but so are many off the path places. Olga's, Walker's and Ro Chez are ridiculously awesome and not your normal fine dining cup of tea.

<div>Jackson's growing on me.... slowly. K, not really that much yet.</div><div>
</div><div>Food-wise, I've just been a little unsatisfied with some of the places I've been as far as quality of food related to price. I dunno. Maybe I haven't been going to the right places. I'm cheap, too, so that plays in somewhat. No money right now- won't have any for.. three years. If I'm going to pay up.... I'd rather it be worth it, because it's going to mean ramen/chicken noodle soup/cereal to balance it out for a few days.</div>

Only place in town where I didn't feel like I had to drown a jumbo margarita just to stomach an over salted grade D meat piece of crap. That's selling it short, though. I constantly crave La Guadalupe and find excuses to go over to that side of the reservoir.

For the original poster:

There's a Vietnamese place on Lakeland called Saigon. It's in an old Arby's and doesn't look like much, but damn it's good. I'm a pho fan there, but the hot pots are the most popular I believe. I think eat jackson did a poll of chefs a few months back on where they eat when they aren't cooking. Half of them said Saigon. If you're into expanding the borders of your dinner a bit, it's cheap and really, really good.

Also, I just read in the Clarion Ledger this morning that CS's is open from 5pm-10pm now. Just want a dang good burger and some beer? Go there.

I wouldn't go near that place at night. My mom worked about half a mile up West Street from there and they had to have a gated parking lot.

his fish dishes are excellant as well. I also really like the fried catfish. They are thin cut and he doesn't use cornmeal batter. It's different from what we are accustomed to, but it's really good.

and CS'sis now open in the evenings according to the CL.</p>
