Yes my parents were there. I was in high school. My dad graduated from MSU. My mom graduated from LSU. They had a snow storm the night before the game in El Paso. I had a picture of my parents standing next to a snow man in front of their hotel in El Paso.

Not meaning to highjack the thread. I also remember the 1980 Sun Bowl vs Nebraska. I was there and in school at MSU. We got beat badly. Me my buddies had a great night on the town after the game.

We beat N Carolina 26-24 in a very foggy 1st half game.
Seemed to lift quite a bit in the 2nd.
Game called by Lindsay Nelson on ABC that day.
I remember some guy had a sign in the stands that said - Eat Your Heart Out Ole Miss!
Bob Tyler showed that State could win. Younger folk are probably unaware but back then it was a big deal. He ended up being a controversial figure in State football lore and will undoubtedly remain so.

I vaguely remember the 1980 Sun bowl. Too young to remember the 74 Sun bowl.

I was about 12 and visiting my grandparents and other relatives in Winston-Salem, NC during that time. It was fun watching us win that one. Felker, Packer, Vitrano, Harmon, Barnum, Webb, and more were my heroes at that time.

I remember it well. I was a junior at State at the time. I believe the following year we were put on probation for some minor bs.

Ditto, wasn’t Ray Costic one of the D leaders on that team? I loved watching the veer or bone triple option. I thought Marler was QB but he must’ve been at State after Felker.

I worked with a guy who went on a chartered bus from Meridian to the 1980 game. He said he never wanted to see the inside of another bus as long as he lived.

Great memory. 14 years old at the time. Those were the best looking uniforms we’ve ever worn

Yes, Ray Costic was awesome. Defensive player of the year. A favorite also.
Dave Marler did come on later and was a pretty good passing qb. I think he had a good pro career in the CFL.

Against Alabama in Jackson, State under Marler passed on every down in the game. Bryant didn't even try to have a pass rush, but let him throw it figuring his DB/s could cover...and they did.

I think we ran for about 450 yards rushing in that game.

It's the one bowl I wish we could return to one more time. My Dad's side of our family is from El Paso and I still have many relatives living there now. Great venue that's carved out of the Franklin Mountains high above and overlooking all of El Paso and Juarez....total of about 3 million person area. Unfortunately, Juarez is not the fun city that used to welcome Americans to come over and spend the day and/or evening to shop, go to bullfights, and true original Mexican restaurants. Drugs and the Cartels now govern Juarez, not the government. Hope one day this can be eradicated and the sharing of 2 wonderful border cities can return to its old self. The citizens of Juarez are wonderful people and I know they would love to have Americans once again come spend money buying a variety of hand made goods unique to the southwest culture. In 1972 I bought a nice leather jacket for $5 at a open air market in Juarez.....and when I got back to Memphis, later found the exact same jacket for about $80. Those were some fun times.

I was going to mention Stan Black. He was from Columbus, our parents were sisters.

Freshman did not play back then. He played WR his sophomore year and moved to safety where he made all SEC his jr & sr year. I was thinking this was his Jr year. Wish I could have seen him play, all I ever got was a radio call once in awhile or highlights on Sunday nights after the late local news. They weren’t on TV much back then and my parents did not attend games as I was only 11.

I know he was drafted but messed up his knee his first year in NFL as that was a career ending thing back then.

1980 Sun Bowl I was still attending dear Ole State. Had a bud from Dekalb getting married & that weekend we had a bachelors party at John Stennis's lake cabin somewhere in Kemper County. It was a high time.

Bruce Threadgill was after Felker and then Marler qb 1 year after kicking for State. Had a great arm.

I thought Threadgill came after Marler, He did have a gun. I bet his throw on the slant was tough to catch - coming in hot.

Did Mardye McDole play with both Threadgill and Marler?
