I love both!!!

I know Holden's Ranch off Hwy 295 in Roebuck has my favorite Chicken Stew.

As far as Salmon Stew, the Flounder Fish Camp in Spartanburg off I26 has the best I've eaten. (except for my mom's)

Chicken stew is Midway in Union. It is better than Holden’s. Can’t speak for the salmon stew. I haven’t eaten it since I moved out of my parents’! Nasty stuff!
Interesting, I don't ever get to Union but because I love Chicken Stew, I might swing over when I'm in Spartanburg. I will order a gallon and take it home. I do that with Holden's. Chicken Stew is not big here in Tennessee. Salmon Stew is unheard of here. The only way you can get Salmon in Tennessee is either in a salad or Salmon Patties at the Diners.

I used to on occasions get chicken stew at the Tadpole Fish Camp in Greer. Does anyone have any intel on if the Tadpole will open up again. I think it burned if i'm not mistaken.

I go with Midway in Union (Buffalo) too. I had eaten Holdens for years and loved it. However when I tried Midway I was hooked. I think Midway has a truck that travels the upstate on weekdays and sells "to go" stew.

Though I'm a southerner I'm not from South Carolina and have never heard of chicken or salmon stew. Is chicken stew anything like Brunswick stew?

I have no questions about salmon stew.

This post withstanding, this is about as southern a thread as I've seen on this board! I don't think I've ever had chicken stew outside my own house,, not sure what's in it, but my wife and I make a mean chicken bog with sausage and rice in it!

What are the hours at Midway? I may be in Gaffney Saturday and might as well run over to Buffalo since folks are talking about how good it is. My family in Greer wants to run up to the outlet stores in Gaffney and I want to go into the Addidas outlet which is my fav there.

We are big fans of both Chicken and Salmon Stew so I'm considering hitting Midway's. If we end up not going to Gaffney, I may go to Boot's and Sonny's in Landrum on my way back home to Tennessee.

Like Salmon Stew, it's very regional. Mostly Upstate SC and Western NC. I've never heard of Chicken Bog? Is that regional to the lower part of the state? What is in Chicken Bog?

Rice, chicken, spicy sausage like andouille and chicken broth for base then add anything extra you like in there, like corn, ect.! Had some last night minus the sausage and corn, but added carrots, it’s one of those leftover compilations!

The origin of its name:
"There are a couple theories behind the moniker. Some say because it’s thick and sticky, it’s called bog. Others claim that the chicken gets bogged down in the rice. Still, others say that the name comes from the swampy, bog-like low country area in South Carolina where the dish originated.

"My mom lived in Florence, South Carolina for a while and picked up the dish from a native South Carolinian. Regardless of what you call it, I just call it delicious."

In the Midlands -- Lower Richland County, to be specific. We say it's because it bogs down in your stomach! :)

I use a Kielbasa smoked sausage in the version I make. Prepare some homemade buttermilk biscuits to go with it and you have a meal brings back all the comfort of mom's best meals!
